Me and bigger recoil starts don't get along well. When you get older kick back hurts more then it used to. Harbor Frieght isn't my favorite , but closer than Northern and basicly the same engine. Another upside was the box had been open. $389.00 regular price and got it for $303.00.

Nothing wrong with Predator engines.

When a small engine kicks back on the recoil, you need to adjust the valves. It has nothing to do with your strength. An engine with valves that are out of adjustment will rip the arm off the strongest guy.

Dead on .003. Learned that a long time ago. Problem on this one is when you pull it you're also turning a 14 inch belt driven vacuum fan. If you don't follow thru, it can hurt.

Today's over head valve air cooled engines should not kick back when starting.
They have a cam that will open either the intake or exhaust valve which acts like a decompression valve making them an EZ start.
Check the intake and valve clearance.
Slowly pull on the starter rope. During compression, when the piston is about half way up, you should notice when the intake valve open and releases all compression.
If an engine were to kick, they have an excess of liquid gas in the cylinder.

GENERALLY it's the EXHAUST valve that gets blipped open for a short duration during the compression stroke for compression relief, making the exhaust valve setting the most critical for easy cranking.
