Markings on flywheel

I have a Ford 2000 diesel. I was checking the flywheel through the inspection port, and notice numbers: 30, 20, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, and 0. Could someone tell me what these number mean? I have searched the I&T manual but could find nothing. They are visible when number 1 piston is at or on TDC.

They are likely the degrees of advance, ahead of TDC. Zero being TDC. Most engines run some degrees advanced, so if your specs say set at 6, you would use a timing light and turn the distributor until the pointer was lighting up on the 6. Jim and I are again typing at the same time. steve

The O.P. stated his tractor is a DIESEL so the timing marks would be used to set up the diesel injection pump timing to the factory "specs" for that specific engine.

And there is such a thing as a diesel timing light that can be used to refine the adjustment further.

Tell us more about how they connect up a diesel timing light not disbelieving you just am curious how that would work on all these old mechanical pump engines. I can and have used lights for gas engines never heard of one for a diesel unless they use the electric injector.

The ones I've seen put a pulse adapter on the line for the timing cylinder. Senses the pulse of that line being fired.
