Hi
How do I check the Oil level in my Simms injector pump?
I need to change the oil but I cannot find the screw which indicate the max oil level

Do any of you know the model of this pump?
I have looked for a serial no but cannot find it

Thanks for your help

It depends what pump you have on your tractor. The early Super had a vacuum governed pump that does
not have oil in it, it mis lubricated by the diesel itself. Later tractors had a Simms MiniMec pump
which has oil in the governor housing to lubricate the mechanical governor only.

I have marked the fill and level points, the drain is underneath. The plugs go into an aluminium
housing so be careful and do not over tighten them.

Nearly identical pump powers my Ford 655A TLB. Except direct gear driven from the other end, and with lift pump mounted right on the side. When I bought it, I serviced it right away, finding that a previous owner did not. So, eventually I had to have the pump rebuilt. The bearings fell apart upon disassembly.

Thanks for your explanation.

I have just uploadet a photo of my pump.
I cannot find the oil level screw.
Is this pump lubricated by the diesel oil and if so, why are there a big nut on top for adding oil?
Do I need to add diesel by this inlet?

At the bottom of the pump, where the red arrow point, I removed the screw and drained the liquid, which was not oil.

On the side of the pump, I cleaned the plate with the model no, which says P4596

That is not a pump for a Super Major originally. Do NOT put diesel into that plug. Is there a plug on the bottom of the bulging bit at the back? If there is, drain it down and put 2/3rds of a pint of engine oil in through that top filler.

It possibly will not be oil that comes out of the governor housing, diesel from the cam box is allowed to seep into it and will dilute the oil. That is why, back in the day, you were told to check the oil level every week and change the oil every time you did the engine oil change.

Hi all , I'm new to this site. I happened to have a Fordson 5000 Major . Which I've been working on. I bought it not knowing what problems it had already carrying with it. I have confronted a challenge. When it comes to the injection pump , it was very dirty when I opened the cover. I cleaned it up, first with WD-40 . I then cleaned it with hydraulic fluid. Then topped it off to level several times priming the inside body with 5 W -30. However However it turns on in the off position / and on position and it always in a violent mode. Like if the accelerator is bottomed out regardless where it is positioned at. A complete run away. Scarry , both times I have turned it on. Unable to turn it off other then with pinch pliers choking the line and or valving off the diesel at the valve after the tank.

Has anyone witnessed or heard of this , when there is a runaway injection pump. I don't want to turn it on again for fear that it might mess up the engine head or block.

Can anyone give me and advice how to start troubleshooting or nay other tip in what to test.

That pump need to come off and sent to someone like Dieseltech on here. There is no way you can service it yourself as you do not have the proper tools. The problem is most likely a sticking rack or possibly a failed governor. It must have had water in it at some time to be that rusty and water will do untold damage to a pump.

Majorman is correct, that pump needs to go to a pump shop. Before you remove it; make sure it is in time, you will save yourself another headache when it goes back on.

Thanx so much Majorman! I appreciate your advice.
Also yes , I have no problem sending it to be refurbished to a professional shop and doing a complete overhaul. I wanted to get perhaps an opinion before attempting anything else. I'll look up "Dieseltech" I happen to live in USA , California to be specific.

Thanks Skipperll, for confirming and your suggestion to make it easier for me on the re-install. Will keep notes

Not sure where it is on the pump.IT will look like someone opened up the end to a round circle looking affair with a bolt through the middle thus a banjo fitting. In your picture it looks like it might have some yellow paint or some other debris on the head. IT is below your cover that is off.

Hi Fritz and Caterpillar guy , so I guess this is the one you are talking about. If I recall , that is a collar made of bronze.

It WAS the one I was talking about... for the other poster. Your level plug is to the left of the banjo bolt, slightly lower.
