Treating Moldboards for Storage

I bought this nice Case plow this spring. As you can see it had not been used recently so was a bit rusty. And its been outside all summer and certainly got no better. I won't be using it for the foreeseable future - what can I do to keep the moldboards from rusting more? Was thinking of coating with used motor oil, but realize grease would be an option, and that there is some kind of paint for this also.

I've known people who greased them and others who have painted them. Either one work but to me the paint would do less harm to the soil the next time I use it

I would sand off the rust now and put on a coating of paint?

I take what ever partial can of rustoleum I have and paint mine. They sit outside all year and the paint holds up well until next plowing season. The paint will scour off relatively quick and until it does the dirt just slides off the paint. Right now my use to be green John Deere plows have Ford blue mold boards until I plow again. Looks stupid but no rust.

I use paint on my plow if you have a place to try it make a round and paint it with what ever half can you got come right off next time

I use a flat black spray paint. But it would be a good place to use up any old, partially used paint.

My neighbor used to coat with grease that he got for nothing from his place of work, but I can see where spray paint would work just fine and be much easier.

That is what we used when I was working on the farm back in the 70’s.

Soft coat is what I used. Quart lasted me about 15 yrs on my 4 bottom every fall. Dab a little on each moldboard and brush it out and brush it out and brush it out.

depends on the soil .
I would say heavy grease in mfg manuals . Would work the best. I’ve used paint in our clay ,it scoured.
But I was told by plowmen at completion , not to use paint in some sandy soil ,moldboards won’t scour. The sand embedded into the paint. Just my experience to share with Ya.
Those that used paint all lost.
i ve used graphit paint for mower decks also recently on Ac plows I have.

Just this week I stored a little genius that I painted and left outside after last use years ago. It was in good shape doesnt even need touch up.

We always used grease because dad got damaged tubes where he worked. Just a thin coat put on after spring plowing would last till the next spring stored outside.

I just clean mine up and use spray paint. Usually Rustoleum gloss black but thats just because I have it handy.

Thanks everyone. Like my father, and probably most of you, I have a large collection of spray paint cans that are partially used. I think I will wire brush the plow and pick one of the cans.

I'm going to be the odd one out and say, "Nothing."

Dad always used grease, but in the past three years I just park my plow outside and forget about it. The polished bottoms develop a light coat of surface rust which works as well as any paint or grease coating in my experience. By the time I get to the other end of the field on the first pass of the year, the bottoms are shined up again.

Once that candy coating of surface rust develops, the steel is sealed off.

It all depends what your soil conditions are. I have a handy loom soil so a light coating of spray paint after all dirt have been cleaned off works for me. One round and the bottoms are very well scoured up
