My 1929 Farmall Regular is refusing to run. I have cleaned out the fuel system, cleaned and rebuilt the carburetor, and rebuilt the magneto.this engine hasn't ran in 30 years so it needed a bit of work. It would pop a little and make mini fires, so I tried to retime the magneto to the engine and now it won't do anything. What is the proper method for timing the mag to the engine? Also, how can I be sure that it's getting gas? Thanks!

If you have it popping a little make sure you have the plug wires on the correct order and starting at the correct spot on the cap. If your tractor ran 30 years ago it didn't get out of time sitting for 30 years unless you had the mag off and reinstalled it off 180 degrees. I'm not familiar with a FM mag but the IH F4 and H4 mag is easy to put back on 180 degrees off.

Find your 1-4DC mark on the flywheel. Position your rotor at No. 1 terminal. Since this is on a Farmall, you must still have your adjustable bolt coupling. Using a white marking pen, make a line across the two halves of the coupling so you don't get lost during adjustment. Now when it comes up on compression on No.1, crank very slowly until the impulse coupling snaps. For greatest accuracy, you should lift the crank with a jack for the last few degrees so you don't go past the mark on the flywheel.

When the coupling snaps, look in the hole and see where the mark is. If the mark is past the hole, select the next hole in the coupling in the opposite direction of mag rotation. If the mark is before the hole select the next hole WITH the direction of mag rotation.

Since the rotor turns 2:1 of the distributor, saying it's "180 degrees out " is misleading and confusing; turning it 180 degrees will only get it to the next cylinder which only further complicates things.

Best to line everything up and start from zero.
