Shear pin on snowblower

Hey everyone!!
My first year with a Massey 135 with snowblower. It works great, and I wanted to change the shear pin in nice weather before the snow hits so I know what to do if it shears in the snow.
I cannot find a shear pin/ bolt. I have looked everywhere. Is it possible there is not one?
Can anyone tell me where theirs is?

Joe, the snowblower is probably not an original Massey Ferguson item. We'll need some info on the make and model of the snowblower to help you. Welcome to YT. steve

When you find it, use what is specified. I would not use anything harder than a grade 2 bolt. You want the cheapest, easiest t to replace part to break first.
I'd look just ahead of the gearbox drive.

Shear pin might be on the tractor end of the PTO shaft and on the auger chain drive. Make and model of blower would help.

I looked everywhere for a tag for the blower, can’t find anything. Guess its old too. Would photos help?
Don’t see anything in either place.

Could be the manufacturer recommended a slip clutch to be used.

How would I know if I have a slip clutch? I know its 2 stage, half out works the hydraulics, all the way out works the transmission.

Post a few pictures of the thrower and the drive mechanisms all the way to the auger(s).

Yes, that appears to be a common shear bolt arrangement. It should be grade 2 or 5, depending on the manufacturer. As has been asked; more good pictures of the entire unit and drive line may help identify it for you.

A slip clutch would be mounted on the snowblower, at the snowblower end of the PTO shaft. Your tractor has a two-stage clutch (not the snow blower) it is not the same as a slip clutch on an implement.

You do not have a slip clutch.

It appears that one bolt holding the two ears together is the shear bolt for the auger drive. The impeller does not appear to have a shear bolt.

Couple good pictures of the tractor side might be helpful. If there was an ID tag I would expect it to be somewhere on the tractor side of the unit.

That shear bolt on the shaft protects the gearbox if you get a stone in the auger. It does not look like there is a shear bolt on the pto shaft where it goes into the gearbox....you should have one there in case a stone gets into the blower housing, to protect the gearbox.

How would a shear bolt work in that splined gearbox shaft? It appears it is likely the common 1-3/8", 6 spline, quick coupled shaft, same as the tractor PTO end, given the picture of the gearbox and yoke. It is not uncommon for many to only have protection on the auger drive, especially older ones.

Looks like someone replaced the PTO and didn't put a shear pin unit on it.

Every snow blower I've seen here in Canada has two shear bolts. There is simply a flange on one end of the u joint, and a mating one on the other part of the pto shaft with a pilot hole to keep them lined up, and a bolt through holes in both flanges. I can show you a picture if needed.

I understand that type of input connection and don't disagree, some have more than one shear bolt. I agree it is best if they have a shear bolt or slip clutch on the input from the tractor. That said, I have also seen many with no protection on the input from the tractor. And given that his picture of the PTO driveline showed a splined shaft for the input of the gearbox, as I asked before, what good would a shear bolt do there on his? It would need a different type of coupling at the shaft to gearbox than his picture shows. The answer to his original question is there is only the one shear bolt in the auger drive of the unit he has, based on the info shown so far. If the make and model of his gets identified the parts list will reveal if something for drive line protection is missing.

This type is pretty common on snowblower here. It also protects the gearbox from power overload...my old blower had a gearbox rated at 100 hp input, and it was not hard to hit deep heavy snow and have the tractor on its knees..!

Yep, I agree with 495man, someone replaced the PTO shaft ( notice the yellow paint ) with a shaft that does not have a shear bolt. If you get something stuck in the 2nd stage impeller you will break something bad.
