351 hydraulic fluid

What do you guys think about using rural king 334 hydraulic fluid in the torque tube and even the transmission on a 351? I have always used what the manufacturer called for on my Kubota and Case IH farm tractors but on an old tractor that originally used 10 weight motor oil in the hydraulics I would think the less expensive fluid would be ok

Less expensive definitely not OK!! You got gears, bearings and the hydraulic pump in there. Put the best Transmission-Hydraulic oil in there you can. I add 2 qts. of 85W140 to the Tranny-Hyd. oil to give it more body. I wouldn't use straight hydraulic oil on my wife's bicycle chain. Must be Transmission-Hydraulic Oil.

Case recommends HyTran now. I use the NAPA equivalent in my Case 300 and 800. Much better oils than they had 60 years ago. Same for engine oil, they recommend 30W for warm weather and 10W for cold weather, because at the time multi-viscosity oils were not available. So I use a 10W-30 engine oil today.

Back in the day , our "400" had a little decal by filler pipe, Type A automatic transmission fluid only , my Dad was
very particular about that, I think you can't find it anymore. The new oils these days for hydraulic systems are fine .
