Stay warm, everyone

With this frigid weather taking over a huge chunk of the country, I hope everyone is dressing for it, especially feet and hands. Frostbite is forever. Had a neighbor growing up who lost a lot of fingers in the Korean War. He wore gloves, even in the summer, to keep from scaring myself and the other kids.

Even at 32, I have to wear a glove on my left hand from all the surgeries to repair tendons and removal of joints. If not doing anything, just standing around, near 50....James

Sorry to hear it, jwal. I've been told it's one of those maladies that will never heal.

PS: A correction, my neighbor wore mittens, not gloves.

Fwiw, 20 or so years ago, I went out, unprepared, on a brutally cold day to hunt deer. I didn't lose any toes, but my feet have been more sensitive to the cold ever since then. I stopped hunting a few years ago, so that will help avoid future harm. Now I stay inside on days like that, not to mention today.

It just hit 26 here in the Shenandoah and this will be the 5th day below freezing. The ice is slowly going due to sublimation but that's torturous.

It was 31 this morning, I wait until after noon to take my walk. I did feed the chickens their warm oatmeal at 8:30. The coop is 8' from the cabin, no gloves. I have a pair of elk skin gloves with sheepskin lining....James

SE Wisconsin, high last Thursday was 50*, yesterday -2*, today 23* and 1” of snow. Grandpa Emil Jens always said,

I had suspected frost bite years on a Colorado trip. Some toes were starting to turn color. Called ER what to do. She says what color I say red to purple. Says come in when they start to turn black.

Ya, black frostbite is bad. Pretty much means "kiss that goodbye."

East of you near Richmond its suppose to get well into the thirties today, and 40s tomorrow! Normally, that is cold for us, but after the last week, I am thinking about shorts!
