2110 Wheel Bearings

I have pulled an axle from my 2110. (Oil on brakes). I'm trying to decide how to proceed and am having trouble understanding just what I'm looking at. I now know that I have the style with a lock nut. I'm assuming that there is a spacer under that bearing cone, and I know that the nut is torqued down to a spec. So that nut has nothing to do with bearing preload, the bearing is in a fixed position on the axle, correct? So that leaves the position of the race as the wild card determining the relationship between the bearing and race, yes? I'm tempted to think that the shims between the housing and the differential have something to do with determining the position of the cone, but if there is nothing "pushing back" from inside the differential, it would seem that won't be the case. Or is the minimal end play supposed to provide that push back? What am I missing?

Is that the 1965 - 1975 2110 industrial LCG or the 1983 - 1987 Shibaura made 2110?

Just did the same job on a 3400, yes the shims control the bearing set up. I would suggest if you don't have an I&T manual or Ford service manual to buy one there is a lot info to be found in the book. I had the hubs off the axles but left the original bearings in as they looked nice. There is a procedure for checking axle end play, I did check the play before I disassembled & after it was well within spec. Be sure to keep the shims together for each side. I replaced both inner and outer seals. The whole procedure is pretty lengthy to start typing it out here, at least for me.
