GEN light always on...been fighting some electrical gremlins on dads 1010 and down to this last issue... Distributor was worn out so replaced it and converted to negative ground (12v). New wiring harness from Brillman, new key switch, new generator. All issues gone, with the exception of this new issue, and that is the GEN light won't go off. Turn the key on and light comes on as usual but it does not go off when tractor is started or throttled up. New generator was polarized, verified new generator is actually charging. Jumpered ground from battery to VR base with no change. I'm guessing voltage regulator (it's only about 2yrs old) but kind of at a loss. Any thoughts or ideas on how to further test/diagnose? Thanks

Try jumping from the F terminal on the regulator to a good ground, this by passes regulator and may make your light go out. Also telling you the reg is bad. Also hook a multimeter and check voltage while doing this.

Engine running at half-throttle, what is the voltage at the battery and what is the voltage at the "A" terminal on the generator?

This does not make the light go out. What next?

13.67 volts at each location.
Those voltage readings seem to indicate the charging system is working

There should be a gray wire from the "L" terminal on the key switch to one side of the indicator lamp that supplies battery voltage to the lamp while the key switch is "ON" and the other side of the indicator lamp connects to the "GEN" terminal on the voltage regulator with a tan wire.

Apparently something is mis-wired in that area.

Will have dad double check the key switch...the labels on the new key switch don't match the original so maybe something is wrong there. Otherwise the rest of the wiring is new and I can verify it is correct!

To be clear, do you have the correct indicator lamp socket installed, with two wire leads, neither of which is grounded?

Yes gray wire is going to L on key switch.

Do you have the 1000 series service manual, JD # SM-2033?

The 1010 manual with wiring diagrams I have access to shows 3 different wiring diagrams for the gas 1010s. The wire colors are not all the same. It appears the wire to the indicator light hooks to the GEN (ARM) terminal of the regulator in all three, as wore out posted. What is your serial number?

I am not sure what dad has for manuals...I'm trying to help diagnose from an hour away or the occasional weekend I get to go help him. Serial # is 18733. Has new Brillman harness.

Here are pictures of the wiring diagram for your serial number. You may need to use a continuity tester or ohmmeter to see that the end to end of a wire match the diagram. There is a chance a color might be off.
