Power Steering for Farmall 504

I found a wide front end for my 504 and would like to install power steering. The current tri-cycle front end does not have power steering. What is involved in converting to power steering?

Welcome to YT forums and PartsASAP
Unless you put a pump on a fan belt, or include a priority valve in the purchase, you will need salvage OEM valving and tubing as well as all the components from a 504 with power steering. Jim

There is a place called Jackson Power Steering, They have conversions for some tractors. Also a while back in Red Magazine a guy talked about putting electric power steering on tractors from cars, again I don't know if 504 is candidate for that. I suspect as Janicholson said a donner tractor would be the best option.

There are two different power steering systems for the 504, both equally rare. One is a hydraulic torque generator motor that installs in place of the steering column. The other is a hydraulic ram assist that installs down on the front end itself.

What is involved, is finding a tractor with the parts, taking them off that tractor, and installing them on yours. You need the torque generator, the priority valve, and all the lines.

The steering column mounted setup is very similar to the Char-Lynn setup used on Farmall H's and M's, and someone with a little ingenuity and fabrication skill could probably make one of those work on a 504. These are a little easier to find.

Jackson Power Steering systems are not cheap. At one time years ago I heard a figure of $4000 for one for a Ford. You really have to love the tractor to want to go this route.

There are also Eaton steering torque generators available. They run between $400 used to - $1300 new. It would need adapted into the steering shaft and a priority/ flow diverter valve adapted to the hydraulic system to provide hydraulics for it.

The Eaton is very similar if not identical to the Char-Lynn setup. If I'm not mistaken, Eaton bought out Char-Lynn and merged their product lines.

I bought a Norden wide front end for my tricycle 504D. The seller said it would bolt right up. There is no way that will bolt up. I talked to some knowledgeable people after that, and they said if it didn't have the wide front from the factory, there was no way to convert. So now I have a Norden that I would sell.
