Was wondering if someone might be able to point me in the right direction in finding an alternator for this 820 Diesel Tractor. It appears to be all original wiring, but most of the new alternators iam finding are one wire.
John Deere will no doubt have an alternator available, have you checked with a dealer? Probably be PRICEY, though! Was wondering if someone might be able to point me in the right direction in finding an alternator for this 820 Diesel Tractor. How long ago did you buy your alternator? Before or after the China Flu Inflation?I bought an AI alternator for
My 1640 from Deere . Cost less than the jobber down the street .
It was also an upgrade from the original 35 amp to a 55 amp .
Come to think of it , probably 10-12 years ago .How long ago did you buy your alternator? Before or after the China Flu Inflation?
Unless you're upping the electrical load on system I vote heavily in favor of having original rebuilt regardless of extra cost over replacement. Was wondering if someone might be able to point me in the right direction in finding an alternator for this 820 Diesel Tractor. Did you ever take a close look to see if an I.D. tag is visible/readable on the alternator? Thanks everyone for the comments. Tx Jim I emailed Abilene Machinery to see if there alternator was indeed a 4 wire since it didnt show the back of it, but After doing a quick search, it turns out there is an alternator shop about 45 min away. Guess Iam gonna take a trip tommorow and get this odd alternator rebuilt. Never realized we had a place that close that rebuilds alternators.

35 amps is pretty scrawny for an odd jobs putting around tractor in cool weather . 55 amp is more like it .Unless you're upping the electrical load on system I vote heavily in favor of having original rebuilt regardless of extra cost over replacement.
Being a Canadian 1130 from Mannheim . Odds are the electrical system is Bosch .Just a stab in the dark and with very little seen it could be a Bosch or Motorola alternators. I went through this on the 2940 to get an alternator that would work on it. Don't remember just what I wound up with now.
I agree. The only issue/reason I was asking for a unit number would be if his particular alternator has an external VR he would need to take it along to the alternator shop, doesn't seem likely from the parts lookup, on the other hand, the alternator in his photo LOOKS like it has a brushholder with terminals for an external VR, rather than a brushholder/VR combo.JD parts show Bosch systems (generator and alternators) for the 820s. The picture very much appears to be a Bosch. AL36391 looks like it has the battery connection and 3 spade terminals, similar to his picture. If the repair shop he is taking it to works out, he should be set.
Thanks for posting the "Rest of the Story"!Well thought I would post a little update. It turns out from my next state over alternator rebuild shop, that my alternator was good after all! He said I needed to look at my voltage regulator, as this alternator was not internally regulated. I hadnt even thought to look for a regulator, and it took me a minute to find it.
I have never met a nicer gentleman. Even if didn't need my alternator repaired, I really enjoyed talking with the guy. I asked the guy what I owed him, and he said "Happy Easter."
I wished I had seen Wore outs post before I headed out. Turns out you were spot on. Yesterdays tractor forum is a vast wealth of knowledge!
