1600 Pto long shaft

I can not get long pto shaft on my 1600 all the way in. It seems to hang up the last 1" or so. Any suggestions? Thanks

Keep turning it slightly and keep on pushing. Probably just haven't hit the right spot in the splines yet. I wouldn't hit it with a hammer, but bang it with a little force. Could it be just the bearing housing just not going in the casting at the rear? There's really no trick to it that you need to know about.

Thanks for the response. I've tried many times with many rotations. Would turning the engine slightly cause a problem?

It won't hurt a thing, but I don't know how it'll help. Go ahead and try. The 1850 shaft is a little different, but I've got a friend in Tennessee who couldn't get the shaft back in his 1850. He tried for weeks and couldn't get it in. He finally got an Oliver guy to come out. He slid it right in like nobody's business. He might as well have been watching a magic show.

Does it feel like it's starting in the splines in the crank hub then stopping, or or just banging up against it? If it feels like it's starting in then stopping, then go ahead and put a wood block on it and tap it with a hammer. I just wouldn't over do it.

Pto shaft must be starting because I can't turn it more than a little play from worn shaft. I'm heading back to work on it in a couple days. Maybe I will perform some magic. Thanks again.

it may be starting to go into the hub at the clutch but could be hanging up at the hydraulic pump, as you turn the shaft if you have forward pressure it may turn the hydraulic pump with the shaft so it does not change the line up at the pump, I have pulled it back a bit, give it a slight turn and go in again. it will eventually go in, may take more than a few tries.

Push it in till you feel it stop then pull back a tiny bit, turn it a tiny bit and push again. Keep doing that until the splines line up and it should go right in. The splined sections are spaced so that only one at a time will engage. Flywheel end hits the pump drive, then the pump splines, then the flywheel splines. Then the bearing at the rear cover will go in snug.
