I do not get any oil on the dipstick thats below and behind the pto lever.
Do I add oil in the hole next to the gear shift lever, on the trans cover ??

Yep, that's the fill hole. Some folks remove the lowest bolt on the dipstick cover and fill until oil comes out of the hole instead of trusting the dipstick. It takes a while for the oil to flow from the fill point to the rear section of the tractor, so be patient. Add a quart and wait for 4~5 minutes, then add another if necessary.

Has the oil been changed in a while? Those are known for collecting water, especially if it's been outside.

Might crack one of the drain plugs and see if you get water. Be a good time to change it if wet or dirty.

90w mineral oil or 15w-40 diesel oil.

What oil is available for these trannies now? I read somewhere that the original gear oil recommendation is no longer available.

Traveller Brand at TSC or purchase from NAPA 65201 or 65201 depending on container size. Ford and Ferguson used the same oil during that time frame. below from TSC website GL1 SAE 90 for most climates

Best not for the engine I would say.. I did run 90 gl1 in my 1937 Packard and it didn't hurt it none. Mine smoked quite a bit , that was the reason.

Yes it was the tranny/diff/hydraulic system fluid I was asking about.

I've got the oil.

I've had an oil leak at the PTO area for some time now. I don't use the tractor much anymore (I'm 75) but I would like to fix it if it's not too much work. I checked the bolts around the PTO cover, and the studs underneath the tractor, and everything is tight.

Is it just a matter of draining the oil, taking the cover off, and replacing the seal and gasket? If it's more work than that, I probably won't bother with it.

If you can get the rear wheels about a foot higher than the front wheels, you do not have to drain the oil.

I am using 75W-90. Costs 120.00 for a 5 gallon pail.

I have found a lot of information out there on this. Original oil was rated at GL-1. Kind of rare now. I purchased some 75W-90W in a 5 gallon size for the hydraulics. I will just use common 80-90W for the gearbox.

Gearbox and hydraulics are a common reservoir. NAPA has GL-1 as well as TSC and other suppliers. It makes for slow hydraulics in cold weather.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, you are correct. The gearboxes are common, and use the same fluid. I appreciate the information.
