JD 55 Combine being scrapped

Hello. On my sisters farm in Waynesboro PA is a 55 combine that they are going to take to the scrapyard. I runs and drives and I just heard about this and it seem ashamed that good parts go to waste. They have already hauled away 2 heads. They were told $500 to $1000 for scrap and there talking next week to get rid of it and I felt compelled to try to find a better solution. I worked on it some and one of the bars bent in the drum and sheered the key on the drive wheel. Have several books also.

I hate to see any such equipment scrapped but the market possibilities are quite limited these days. You could try advertising on a venue such as Craigslist where it would get a wide view in terms of area. Maybe somebody will want a vintage machine for HCOP or similar show.

I sold my 45 twice. First time they came and took head and manuals. They were supposed to come back and never did. Over 10 years later I just couldn’t see my self doing anything with it. Felt bad selling it but it went from NWPA to Ohio and last I knew it was running. Pretty sure I posted on Craigslist. Problem is it might be worth more in scrap then what somebody will pay but I prefer to see them somewhere else than a scrap yard.

That's a later one. Looks nice. What is the serial number? Have you posted it on the combine forum on this site?

Based on a serial number list credited to Green Magazine, your serial number makes that machine a 1967 model, quite late in the 55 lineup.

Are you referring to the threshing cylinder with your term "drum"?

Yes, I think I called it the cylinder on Craigslist. I was called to fix a sheered key but told her there was more problem, pulled the head and found a bent, hung up bar. Didn’t go any further, this was lat fall.
