How much does it cost to replace a TPMS Sensor ?

The tire barn in Terre Haute wants $85 to replace one TPMS Sensor on a 2018 XT5.
Is there that much labor involved to replace it?
Is $85 about the average price?
I was quoted $232.00 to replace all four Sensors on my 2010 Nissan Frontier at a local tire store.

Les Schwab charged $200 for 4 on my son's car when it was getting new tires. When one quit, they fixed it for free.

I paid $35 each for Schrader branded sensors for the daughter's car (identical) and made her install them! (along with the tires)

The cheap aftermarket sensors are around $40 last I knew, let's guess the tire shop pays $30 for them. The tire must be demounted and remounted, the sensor has to be programmed to the vehicle unless you don't care which one is reading low when they go off. $85?? pay it and go on with life. They aren't getting rich.

I got two quotes recently
One was 128
The other was 79
Suggest doing your quote as fair because the cost of gmc sensors at auto parts was 34 for my truck
I’m not very good at tire tussle and to reseal a bead , my labor cost would not beat t either of these quotes . I’m just suggesting , you got to figure your time to get Jack stands out ,charge up air compressor, tools out ,tie irons ,beat the bead off rim ,clean rim of northeast Ohio road salt , clean rim bead seal it , remount, clean up ,put everything away recalibrate tps , 200 to 250 my time and materials parts

For the Yukon, which should be the same sensor as yours, were 75 installed at my tire dealer, and they are covered for life, Ill never have to pay for one as long as I own it. Same with the wifes Malibu. They are Schraders. Your call, but Im betting youll be on Amazon later today.

New sensors for my old XT5 are about $40 for 4. Amazon shows which sensors will work and the ones that won't work,
The tires were replaced 2 years ago and this car doesn't get driven much.
The tire barn wanted $32 to install a sensor if I buy them. My boss just wants to get the job done tomorrow.
I may call my dealer and see what they charge. The car is due for an oil change.
This has to be fixed because the service engine and TP light is on.
around here , a tire shop would charge about $30 to $40 for any kind of tire repair where they had to pull the tire from the rim replacing the sensor would be about the same amount of effort as pulling a tire and installing a patch ? in my humble opinion

I have been doing business with the tire barn since they opened over 20 years ago.
The tire barn recently removed a nail from my tire and didn't charge me a penny.
I wouldn't have known I had a nail if I didn't get a warning of low tire pressure, 30 psi, from my Tire sensor.
Perhaps I should pay them the $85 for replacing the tire pressure sensor. Thanks to everyone who told me what they paid for having their pressure sensors replaced. Next time I buy new tires, I may have new pressure sensors installed too.
Edited: I called the dealer and they want $150. So off to the tire barn.

Part of the cost will be dismount, remount, and balance, as well as replacement and reprograming. Mark.
You don't have to dismount the tire from the wheel, just break the side with the stem. The tire doesn' have to be rebalanced if you only break the side with the stem and install the same OEM sensor (weight). Anybody saying otherwise and you plan to have them do the work, are just inflating your bill!!!!

Thank you for your reply. This is my first experience with replacing TPMS.
Will a dead battery in the sensor cause a check engine light to come on?
I like the TPMS sensors. On a few occasions it told me I had a nail in my tire before the tire goes completely flat.
With the 8 vehicles we maintain, we have replaced several sets of TMPS sensors (all from Amazon) without a problem. Never had a dead battery in them cause the check engine light to come on. Have tried replacing the defective one in the past, but my experience has been; once one goes bad, the others are soon to follow.

What I have in stock.

1)Smart Sensors I am winging myself off of them.
2)Autel I have had my share of issues with them so when my stock is gone they are gone.
3)Bartec rite sensors they work great
4)Schrader sensors the best bar none.

When I have time I go to Ebay are Amazon and get OEM most of the time 4 for $40. I will replace all are one at a time their call. Why we use Programable sensors you are paying for the convenience that's it they are no better them OEM. Bartec has a lifetime warranty I never use that as a selling point the profit margin is to low to offer a lifetime warranty.

This is a C tech job if it were an A tech job double the price. Because this is a C level job those that work for peanuts perform this for little profit. I find I need at least 3 TPMS scan tools none do them all it gets expensive to keep up.

I'm late as usual, but last year I bought 4 from Amazon for my old minivan, '07 Chrysler. "That model is basic, no reprogramming needed as they don't report position, just a low tire warning. Anyway, cost me about $40 buck for the set. I ordered tires from Walmart. The techs replaced my sensors when mounting the new tires. No additional charge.

I would bet most places would encourage rebalancing, or they would not stand behind a shimmy or a vibration. Mark.

We'll shop elsewhere. If you didn't have a shimmy going in there and they only did what I said, why should you have a shimmy leaving...............

Well it is kind of like this...

Some slap nut shops will remove the tire. Install a sensor and put the tire back on the rim. Put the tire back on the car and send you on your way.. Possible shimmy.

A good shop will mark the valve stem location on the tire and any hammer on outside wheel weights. Then reinstall the tire with the marks lined up and you are good to go.

A better shop will mark the valve stem and outside weights. Reinstall the tire and weights. Then check the balance with no charge to the customer.. That was me. A better tire shop. I wasn't greedy nor wanted the reputation as being a ripoff. I wanted customers and better yet repeat customers..

Mark,
When I buy tires from the Tire barn I pay $10 extra for road hazard and Free lifetime tire rotation and balancing. Another reason to use tire barn.
For $250 we replaced all 4.

good idea. Thanks
I mention Amazon and catch heck.
The OEM sensors were made in MEXICO.
Does anyone make anything in the USA?
Edited:
Amazon shows the 2018 xt5 used a 315 MHz sensor.
The one removed from the car is a 433 MHz sensor.
4 of them for $25 and not made in China.
