bill hook not releasing twine

I have a dearborn 14-49 it will tie a knot, but the bill hook will not release the knot. how do I know if the wiper arm is working correctly? what else could be the problem? I'm not really sure where to even start. I read that you can bend the wiper arm to help, also the right wiper arm has some play in it sideways but neither bill hook will let the knot go. please help

Check the round drive balls inside the gear that operate the billhooks, they may be too worn to function properly.

If the knot is made properly on the billhook, the problem is with the wiper arm as that is what strips the knot off of the billhook. The concerning part of your statement is that both sides are doing the same thing. Did you change the brand or size of twine you are using? Did this problem start abruptly and if so, what else changed at that time?

i have not changed twine. I'm sure I'm using something different than what was being used, I just got this it had been sitting in a barn for 30+ years. when we first got it home I put some nylon string used for trot lines in and the left side would wipe it off, but the right side would stay, we put a Kohler 25 horse on it and i bought some twine and that is when it started not wiping off both sides

Do they come off if the bale continues through the chamber, or cause a mis-tie?

When most balers finish a knot and it stays on the bill-hook, the cure is to reduce billhook jaw tension.

The wiper should lightly contact the billhook about 1/2 " from the open end of the billhook.

I think that knotter was made for sisal twine.

Did you get plastic or sisal twine?

Are you feeding hay constantly and running at a good RPM? Balers are designed to run at 540. It is a common error for beginners to try to "take it easy on the old junk" and try to run at 2/3 speed. This is very hard on a baler, and is the cause of various problems.

Trip it and turn it over by hand a little at a time while watching whats going on
