Decided - due to my arthritic hands, poor depth perception and life-long clutziness - that I needed a chisel handle or holder if you prefer.

Looked on line and I will NOT pay $25 to $50 for a $10 tool, so I made one. Cut a ring off a suitable piece of pipe, drilled and threaded a hole in it, tacked on a square nut for extra strength and ground down a 1/4-20 bolt head to an interference fit in an old 4-way screwdriver.

Uglier than a mud fence, but plenty good enough for my shop.

Interesting. Guess I never thought of it. Usually use a channel locks or vice grip to hold a chisel, punch, etc.

My hat's off to you for building that though, after suffering "arthritic hands, poor depth perception and life-long clutziness".

Was Stevie Wonder your QC? ;)

I have found that the older i get, the more time i spend getting ready to do something greatly increases as i try to plan an easier way to do something over how i would have 25 years ago. Example is the pictures i posted in fab projects of raising my bandsaw up. It finally hit me that bending over was a pain ( in more ways than one).

Not a thing wrong with homemade tools, I have several.

Also have good collection of wrenches that are bent, twisted, cut, and otherwise mutilated, etc., in a dedicated drawer for such items.

Well i will tell you what pilgrim its a lot better than busted hands and can be rebuilt if the worst happens! Yes i have seen that happen.

I too, have a box of 'special' tools like that. Some I made, some Dad made. Now, Dad is still with us at almost 90. Some of those modified tools he looks at and knows exactly why he made them. However, there are a couple where he says "what the heck did I need to do that I had to make that?".

I have a box of various size sockets, each with the OD turned to some specific diameter for special applications in the tool-room. I cannot recall what any of them were designed to do. Some have a very thin wall, some thin and short, etc. Today all they are good for is holding down the shop floor. I'm not far behind your dad, I'll be 83 Dec. 25.

That's a great idea. I too don't want to hit my hand with a maul instead of the chisel (any more.....). I use a pair of pliers when I feel my hand is in jeopardy.

Nice idea, I use vice grips to hold chisels instead of smacking my fingers with a hammer,
