Deere 70 Advice

I'm looking at buying a 70 that has already had a lot of work done. I was wondering a 70 can be competitive pulling or is it a waste of time. The tractor has been modified with an 8 inch stroke and it has a power block which is bored out to 6.625. It has been lightened by deleting the power trol with a plate and a lighter radiator. What are your thoughts on this being competitive in the 6000 or 6500 class? How about anything above that? I'm just getting started so I'm still learning. Thank you for your time.

That size motor will work for you in a Top Cut class or Div 2 as some places call them where the speed limit is 3 or 3.5 mph. If you're looking to pull faster you will need more bore and stroke to get it done. This one is pretty competitive but has a 10" stroke and 7 3/4 bore and a lot of lightening down to it.

Thank you. I have so much to learn.
We were all there one time. My wife is pulling a pretty much stock G and doing well with it. It is stock stroke and 6 3/8 bore with high compression pistons, 2 barrel carb and a good pulling cam. She won 6500 lb top cut NATPA points championship 2 years ago with it and is currently leading in that class again this year. She has 14-9-38 top cut tires on it. We run 120 Renegade race fuel in it and all our pulling tractors.

That sounds like a very nice combo and she's doing a great job. I know I need high octane fuel like that so I have to find a local supplier.

Personally, if I were to get back into pulling tractors I’d looks for something else. I’ve got some JD and love them but you have to sink a bunch of money into them to get them competitive pulling, at least around here.

Yeah I have read that about deere costing so much more. I did get the 70 but only because it came as a package with another tractor I was looking at. I know I'm behind the 8 ball making these work but my buddy has a couple old Farmalls and I just want to have some fun and give him a run for his money every now and then. I also have a 730 Diesel that I would like to put in the heavier classes.

It's just hard to get much power increase with just 2 cylinders without spending a bunch of money.

lol ok Speaking of money and HP.... So I'm going to have to pull this 70 down and replace the crankcase. I got the tractor as part of a package deal with another tractor as it needs work. The tractor was ran on too low of an octane fuel, pre detonated and cracked the crankcase from the main bearing up. I can just transfer the crank, block and head over to the new crankcase but just thinking.. Should I go ahead and stroke it further while it's apart? Currently its an 8 inch stroke. It will be next spring or summer before I get time to start this project but always like to think ahead.

There is some manner of reinforcement that is used to strengthen the 70's crankcase. Not familiar enough with such to comment further.
