50 8N Piston Ring Spacer?

I just tried the search function here, gotta learn how to refine my search a little. I've pulled apart a well used engine and taken the bare block to the machine shop. He wants to put new sleeves in it, sounds good to me. So I'm cleaning up my pistons to take over there. They're so dirty that not until they were getting pretty clean did i notice a spacer at the top of each top groove. They're not loose, and don't look like they'll want to come out. Is this common to find? Thanks!!, and I'll keep reading here.

leon bee, your current pistons have been refurbished in the past by cutting the ring grooves wider and installing spacers to bring them back to specifications. If your ring side clearance is within specifications and skirt to wall clearance within specification and wrist pins are tight you are good to go. If all is good except skirt to wall clearance you can have the pistons knurled to correct the clearance. After all this fun and games I am pretty sure you will be financially behind had you a purchased engine sleeve, ring and piston kit in the first place.

If the rings are stuck in the pistons, just break them out, they don't cost much.

The spacers will be free once the rings are out and can be reused, with standard rings.

When the pistons are cleaned up, see how they fit in your new sleeves. Your machinist will tell you whether the pistons are reusable.

I have the machine shop evaluate and advise on things like this for me. I had a 172 opened up for a valve job, and decided to check bearings. I found that the rings were free to move up and down 1/16 in the grooves.

Took my nice clean pistons to the machine shop guy today. He's kinda old-school Arkansaw like me, think I'm just gonna buy rings.

I wasn't intentionally rejecting the forum's majority opinion, just hate to discard something usable. Or as this one guy over on the Ford Barn or HAMB says: "don't never throw nothin away." Be a while before I get my block back, I've been reading old posts here. Thanks!!

Lets be honest. You are most definitly rejecting the majority opinion. Your definition of usable and that of the majority here differ considerably.

Your machine shop guy will tell you if pistons are within specifications or not. The majority is not always correct as I have noticed through out the years. I would be really surprised if piston skirt to wall clearance is within spec. Let us know the end result please.

I got $20 that says actual measurements confirm the majority opinion.
