800 vs 801 Engine difference

Can someone go over the differences between the two engines? Is it only the manifolds and carbs, or is there an internal difference as well?

Higher compression, as well. I don't know for sure, but would assume that means a change to the head, with a smaller combustion chamber.

I think you'd almost have to get an old-fashioned parts book as illustrated below that has date ranges for all of the parts and pick your way through the Engine and Fuel System sections (example shown below). The basic engine internals remained remarkably similar throughout the 1953-1964 production range. The oil pump was changed from a gear type to a rotor type in 1961.

Because of the higher compression the 801 has 1/2 inch head bolts where the 800 had 7/16. I am pretty sure that the higher compression came from the head. The pistons looked the same to me.

I think it has more to do with the way hp testing was done being changed about the time 801 came out.

Having had both a 900 and 901 at the same time IU can tell you that there are distinct differences. Now these can be hard to quantify, but the 901 sure used noticeably more gas.
