1950 John Deere A clutch

I removed the clutch on this A and measured components in it, pulley disc is worn, measured ,510 thick, I don`t see one available with that thickness plus. Serial number on tractor is 650199 showing a .373 thickness for application ,breakover point is 64800, I wonder if this wasn`t for the earlier model tractor? Ideas? JR

Would f195r be the disc you speak of? Steel and only one?

The .373 would be the correct one for the serial number

How far are you going into this? I was going to do a complete rebuild on the 52 this year it’s time and I’ve put it off spending the money for too long I believe it will share most of your parts

I tried new springs and facings a few years ago and it didn’t help as much as I hoped so I was going to do both disks

The part that I find different is JDS545 , clutch disk with bonded lining , my original is worn and ,510 thick .my new one is .375 thick ,when you adjust the clutch you are running the castle nuts in to far to engage your cotter keys. I shimmed the nuts, but thats a micky mouse b, s. way to do that, allows me to move the tractor any way .I`m not sure that they might not offer a shorter stud for this. Ok you are describing the same problem that I have. Unfortunately I’ve got enough tasks yet with the A and it’s functional for the summer I won’t be pulling this apart yet but it’s possible someone put the wrong height in yours I guess. Did they do the other facing? There is one on the inside as well should be 2

A bit more explanation, I had assumed mine was incorrectly done by the person before and I had installed new facings of the correct height and it made my problem worse. That was the path I had taken last fall.

My next thought was new steel parts the disk, the driving disk possibly the pulley although that seemed like a more difficult thing to source.

Perhaps someone else will jump in with any other thoughts as to where the different facings came from because I too had experienced this.

My clutches were shot in my tractor making me adjust the nuts all the way in to where cotter pins wouldn`t work to lock the nuts. This new triangle shaped piece is thinner than the one I pulled out. This piece I`m talking about slides right over your adjusting studs and has friction material riveted to each side of it, maybe new .550 thick. it`s ,510 ,5,20 now, with the rivets right at catching steel on each side. What they say replaces that is ,373 thick? That I don`t see working. This is the late version with actually 4 friction discs ,2 riveted and 2 floating in the unit, JR

Where are you coming up with part number JDS545 Unless I'm looking at the parts diagram wrong, your serial number should be AD752R! States it is .393" thick. You do have the sliding disk installed also along with the other two floating disk and the bonded disk? How does the clutch driver fir on crankshaft, 1/8" proud of end of crankshaft? EDIT, i now see that that part number is listed for that year, but as i stated the parts diagram on JDPARTS shows AD752R

I believe the kit with everything including the pre bonded disks is JDS6858

That is what I intended to order plus a big steel driving disk.

I had assumed the disk more than anything was why mine was off.

Just a heads up this website is a direct competitor to that place. For the most part the moderators let it slide but just be aware.

That competitor does do a few things though that are handy and should be noticed by the powers at be here. The clutch kits are one of them. The layout of the catalog is another good thing. The website however is horrendous though trying to find something. That’s much easier here. I almost always have to look in the book over there.

I found out that john deere has the facing asbestos ,part number D1760 R .180 thick , you need two ,for the rip off sum of 100,00 a piece. The identical size and , .150 thick is around 20.00 . John Deere has always been high. Anyway I guess I` will deal with them. JR

Don't overthink that JD clutch. A clutch job on an old two cylinder is a quick easy job anyway.
On my JD B - actually a model 530 - there is so much adjustment on the clutch that the plate thicknesses don't seem to matter. When I originally rebuilt the clutch there were a couple of extra flat steel plates in there. Probably put there to compensate for wear by some previous owner. It worked just fine before and after.
