Case DC4 drivetrain noise.

Before my Grandfather passed away back in 2008 or so, he gave me one of his tractors. It's a 1945 DC-4 that has an excellent running engine. I don't really use it, but I store it indoors and run it a few times a year. I now have a larger acreage and plan on plowing with it in the future. One problem it has is noise coming from the rear axle, or trans area in third or fourth gear. It seems to be speed related. Second gear you can't go fast enough to hear it. Gets worse the faster you go. Sounds like a dry or worn bearing type of thing. You can also feel it. I did change the gearbox oil many years ago, and that didn't make any difference. I see there are grease fittings on each axle, and I've probably put 30 pumps into each side, no change and no grease coming out anywhere.

Any ideas or things I can check?

You will have to take the top off the transmission and inspect the bearings and gears. I had one apart many years ago. I didn't think it was too hard to work on at the time.

axle bearings only need one or two shots,, grease Never comes out unless the seal and bearing are shot,, ,,, was there any metal/debris in the oil when you drained it ? rough bearings make sound carry,, there is a bearing that can fail if they are left sitting engine running and the clutch disengaged, that may be getting rough,, or just from years of water in the oil/low on oil ect can make them get noisy,, like said pull top cover and see what is going on,, they are built to be owner repaired for the lost part
