Guessing this is the right forum....question on a C-IH 895 PTO shaft leaking.

Got my hay baled but had hydraulic fluid splattered all over the rear of the CIH 895. I have the service manuals for the 895 and the 395 and the parts list for the 395. Apparently the company used the same PTO parts for a series of their tractors. In looking for that repair the closest I get in the manuals index, is the PTO clutch replacement. The onset of the instructions tell you to drain the oil....obviously...and then remove the clutch cover plate...below the clutch, drive out a pin on the front of PTO shaft, remove the PTO shaft cover and with help (they said you would need help....must be pretty heavy.....) you could back the shaft with the clutch attached out of the machine for repair.

On an another source of information....unreferenced, it said just remove the 3 PTO cover bolts, remover the cover and pull the shaft right out....then undoing the spring clip holding the seal in place, remove and replace the seal.

I have never done this before on this make tractor and work alone....age is impacting my abilities.

The question is.....do I not worry about loosing fluid when I run the PTO or within my capacity, remove the shaft and replace the oil seal without a lot of headache. I have replaced Ford PTO shaft seals and that was a walk in the park.....am I up against a fence here? Comments "really appreciated".

By looking at the partsbook, you should be able to remove the three bolt cover and replace the seal. Years ago, I had to replace the pto shaft since it was snapped off, either too long of shaft on batwing mover or turned to short, but had to remove 3pt housing to get at a snap ring to replace the shaft. Best part I had to do the same job a year later same tractor. 895XL

You have my attention sir.....mine is with the deluxe cab so I guess it's an 895XL.

As I mentioned on my Fords, when you pull the outer cover off with the PTO shaft still in place, the seal is in the cover....makes perfect sense. Are you positively telling me that on this tractor the same design exists....I pull the outer cover off (3 screws) and the seal is in the cover? You would really make my day if you have done this or have witnessed this procedure.
Thanks for your response.

I would not positively tell you they are the same however the Case online parts catalog only has the 895. The 895 catalog has the cab and related components. That indicates to me the XL is a marketing thing for the options package on an 895. I agree with matthies. If you want positive you could check with your Case dealer, if no one comes along that has done this.

Great idea. Thank you sir!
Well I went to their site, registered, posted my question and awaiting any reply.....hopefully one that I can do. I do not want to pull the whole shaft and PTO clutch assy. especially having never done it and working alone....the manual suggests getting help if you remove the whole assy!

Things to consider. The shaft turns in the seal, so on the inside it is not held onto the shaft and slides on and off, like a common seal. The outside of the seal needs to be held from turning. Looking in the parts book at its position it would be mounted in the outer three bolt cover. There is nothing shown that would hold the cover to the shaft, the bearing is inboard of the cover, so it would be held in the rear housing.

Given that info I would drain the oil to below the shaft and pull the cover off, holding in on the shaft, in case it slides out, which it shouldn't. If you need to change the output bearing that would require pulling the shaft. It will be interesting to see what the answer is from Case.

Thanks for the reply sir. In researching this subject more this AM, I found out that CIH uses the same PTO parts and arrangement for all the series of X95s. I looked at my 395, made some dimensional measurements, compared them to the 895 which were the same. Then going to the parts supplier I found out that the seal that I am wanting, have ordered and has shipped, covers all models in the X95 series....whoopee. I'm home free.
