Custom Wood Splitter made with Farmall engine - What model?

This was created by my father-in-law around 1975 give or take a few years. He worked for Ford and also farmed a little bit. Had lots of old farm equipment and regularly went to the junk yard to find parts to build stuff. He was an amazing mechanic that could get any kind of engine to run. His four car garage is probably better equiped than most machine shops and truck repair shops.

He is now suffereing from Alzheimer’s and asking him questions about anything he owns, he cannot recall.

We might find a three ring binder with a manual he would have written himself for this. He was meticulous about books and manuals for all his equipment. So far nothing has been fouund.

What I know about this:
- Engine is from a Farmall tractor. No idea what year or model. I have included photos of all sides and a close up of the engine plate. But the plate is badly corroded and I don’t even want to touch it for fear it will just crumble into dust.
- It is a four cylider hand crank start. It starts reliably after applying the choke and cranking for a third time.
- It is mounted to an I beam and a Ford Fairlane(?) axel.
- Hydraulic pump(?) and cylinder is from a dump druck.
- Belt drive I assume is from the Farmall?
- Belt drive runs a buzz saw which I am not showing right now. Possibly later once I have identified everything.
- It has brake lights and turn signals he added that can be hooked up when towed.

Is it possible to identify the year and model Farmall this is from?
I like to know so I can properly take care of the engine over the years that I now own it.

Not a tractor motor as the tag say y69, it was a stand alone power motor used for hay balers and such. I let someone else chime in on the 225 as I not sure if that is displacement. Looks neat!

Not a IH engine, made by company on plate. Model of engine followed by serial number. IH used them for power units. Lots of other companies used the engines also. Back in the early fifties we used a silage cuter powered by one but maybe bigger. If you can see complete serial num by looking for a serial number list it could tell year. 69 is cubic inches of engine.

Yes, Continental IY69 engine. It is 69 CI displacement. The reversing gearcase built into the clutch housing generally (maybe always) indicates it came from a combine rather than a baler. Combine could have been 52R or 62, maybe others.

Continental Y-69 power units were common on IH equipment. Seen plenty of them on pull type combines.

So I went out and gently cleaned the engine plate and got the full set of numbers. New pic included.
Confirmed IY69.
Serial number 22544.
Continental Motors Corp
Detroit & Muskegon, Mich

It says Detroit & Muskegon Michigan, I see other plates have been added to the thread that clearly show this.

Could that have been from a Farmall Combine? My wife is adamant that it was from a Farmall. That's what her father always told her.

Mike, welcome to YT! Sorry I didn’t greet you in my first reply. There is an Edit button at the lower left, if your on a phone or tablet the three dots to the right of Report access the Edit feature. You will not be able to delete the reply, you could leave a couple periods or opps reply removed. You also only have 24 hours from the time you make the post to edit it. That is a very unique machine should have plenty of power to run the splitter. My grandpa was a blacksmith in Kansas. He built the power unit for a portable welder out of a 28 Chevy car engine. He even made the governor on it from scratch.

Mike : I saw the powerful as a nation logo, that was common in 40’s and 50’s themed from after the war effect from WW2. It looked to me as a stand alone motor most likely why your father in law used it. I have a continental motor massy 65 that was my dad’s not bad motors to work on. I am not an expert by no means other on here are, my IH interest starts in the 06 ,66 and 86 tractors. If it was me I start looking on eBay for manuals using the numbers you have you should find something and go from there. Your father in law looked like he had a good understanding of all things mechanical. Good luck and post if you need help a lot of knowledge on here.

Could that have been from a Farmall Combine? My wife is adamant that it was from a Farmall. That's what her father always told her.

"Farmall combine" was not a thing. "Farmall" was a name IH used on specific types of tractors. That engine was never used by IH in any tractor. To some people, anything from IH was a "Farmall". Your father-in-law may have gone down that path.
