Ford tractor 2000 series diesel 1974 bad generator

I wanted to get your thoughts and suggestions. I took the generator apart and there are springs that are broken and No pads left. Should I go ahead and buy an alternator for it as a better alternative or stick with a replacement generator?
This is for a 1974 diesel 2000 series Ford tractor.

I may be wrong, but that looks like an alternator!

That’s what I thought, but everybody called it a generator for some reason

It's up to you, I looked up brushes for your generator 309791F and they are ridiculously priced at around $90 for some reason. A whole generator is available from this site for not much more or an alternator converion kit for about twice as much.

Those spring almost impossible to find. I checked eBay and other shops with no luck. Any suggestions?

Is it a Lucas generator?

For that type of springs on a Lucas C40 type generator you need the brushes with an off-center connected wire.

Brush springs, Lucas number: 227542
Brush set, Lucas number: 227541

Just thinking.
If you have a scrapped Lucas starter motor, check the brush springs on it. They may fit the generator.
