231S Massey Ferguson Tractor with 1040 front loader with hay fork and 3 point mounted fork. Stolen in the past few days from field where it was parked near the town of Anderson in Lauderdale County Alabama. Not just today. Approximately 55 years ago we had a Ferguson TE-20 left out in the field due to some problem. When we returned to get it running, we discovered someone had been into it trying to steal it. Evidently (and fortunately for us) they couldn't get it running and/or had no means to transport it, so it remained in the field.

Exactly what I was thinking! Yes, it angers me that it happened, but I was almost enraged that the blame was put on "today's society". Don't ANYBODY act like this is new!.

Last year my buddy had a JD 4040 with loader, and round bale clamp stolen. A few days later, a friend called hime and
told him, he thought it was setting in an empty hay field about four miles away. They had used it to steal a field full of round bales.
Might want to go for a drive??

Equipment theft is a real issue . My uncle lost three tractors in his time , first was almost new Farmall 460diesel wide ft fast hitch , next was a three month old Farmall 706 diesel wide ft three point and the next was a 4520 John Deere stolen the night of the county tractor pull back when most tractors were driven tp the pulll across the county . That night that pull started a 7 pm and i was headed back the 13 miles to the barn as the sun was coming up . None ever recovered GONE . My one close friend has his New Holland L X665 skid steer stolen on the coldest night of the year out of a closed barn . Several months later it was recovered and returned . But not before he had to lay out of pocket on a rental unit at 200 a day then the cost of buying another L X 665 .In my time i have heard of BIG stuff vanishing . Back in the early 60's a Lima 2400 drag line was gone in two days and for those of you who has never seen the size of a 2400 Normally it takes DAYS to tear down and requires a BIG crane and a TEAM of men who has taken one apart and put it back together again and no less then six semi's . Where i worked the company had two 2400's that could be used as a loading shovel , a dag line or crane or clam shell work . I only ever saw it in the crane and drag line Mostly crane app. while building bridges I know of a small time stripping operation that shut down for a week while waiting on a permit and bond move to a new block of coal only to come back and find that the 992 , the 988 , the one D 8 and two D 9' had went bye bye and never recovered . Semi's vanish over night and even in broad day light . when we had to move one 2400 we allowed two weeks for tear down transport and reassembly with six guys and one crane operator and 6=7 truck driver and the Lima 44 crane . During my trucking days two trucks were stolen in East Gary at bar where a lot of drivers came in . I use to stop in a couple nights a week . One evening i was setting with a steel hauler and talking with him and he said he had to leave by 10 to go load at 10:30 He got up and walked out and he was back in the door screaming some one call the cops someone stole my truck . His K W was setting next to mine when i pulled in next to it . Several weeks later a Pete 359 parked next to mine vanished . Guess nobody wanted my I H 4300 .

Seriously what are the chances of finding a stolen tractor unless it has a simple cheap gps tracker installed. It could sit in a driveway 50 miles away in plain view and no one would give it a second thought.

I remember reading about something like this happening years ago. It was in Ohio, I believe, guy had a new 1850 Oliver stolen overnight. Someone unhitched the disk he had hooked to it, unhitched the planter that was hooked to his Oliver 88 and then pull started the 1850 and drove off.

Early 70’s here a local guy was having cut over timber land cleaned up to make pasture. Had a local outfit hired. They were running 2 Cat D6’s. On a Friday morning Cat dealer delivered a new 6 and took one of the old ones in. Parked them that afternoon in a backside place. Not visible from road. Neighbor remembered waking up Sunday morning at dawn to sound of large truck going by. Thought it was a feed truck going to chicken houses up road from him. Monday morning dozer guys show up and discover the new dozer gone. It was never found. Local rumor mill always said it had to be an inside job for anyone to know where it was. Who ever got it drove an 18 wheeler and lowboy in, loaded and drove away.

I remember a real similar story to that about 50 years ago in Farm Journal or Michigan Farmer or something. Seems like in that story, it was a 2655 and they towed it with a 770.

Usually it is someone close by. They know where the tractor is and when would be a good time to steal it. Someone tried to steal my 56 Chevy pickup a few years ago. They had pulled out the wiring from under the dash and probably tried to hotwire it. But I have a newer steering column in it with a key lock that you can't turn the steering wheel and shift out of park (column shifted automatic trans) without the key. So it takes 2 keys to make it drivable. Even if you get it started by hot wiring it you couldn't drive it. They rewarded me by breaking the lens of the speedometer. Probably punched it out of frustration.

Blacktop crew had a JD 310 backhoe stolen.
They drove it 3 miles down a blacktop road cut a lock on a gate drove it another mile down an old logging road and replaced the lock.
It took the cops longer to dust the tractor for fingerprints than it did to find it.

State regularly parks it state road grass cutting tractors on the side of the road for extended periods. Ain’t no one foolish enough to touch them.

Never give up. In January 2011 someone back into shed and took my 16 ft trailer. Made a report and deputy really did not want to. Said I would never see it again. Made the report. Had welded numbers under it when I built it. Also knew a couple of “quirks” that happened when building it. Also had a nice picture of it and gave it to deputy. Always looked for it whenever I met a trailer on road. In July 2021 was in a rented black Tahoe on way to very important appointment. Was leaving next day for trip to North Carolina. Met my trailer on road. Did a quick u turn and caught up to them. Was a four lane road. Pulled up beside them and verified my trailer. Got tag number. Trailer was loaded with scrap. Called sheriffs office. Gave them info and fact there was a report filed in 2011. Investigators called me that afternoon and needed more info. They knew where it was and was going there next day. Called me next morning and I gave them some odd measurements and things we did to trailer when building it. Got back from North Carolina a week later and went to sheriffs office and got my trailer. Basically un hurt. Appears to have been under cover all those years. Picture is when I got it home

Growing up we were never allowed to leave a wagon or other equipment parked in any field with access to a road. Dad said it might not be there in the morning.

Grampa told of taking the family to town for some Friday night shopping. When they got home the dog was missing. In the morning he found the gas barrel that had just been filled was empty.
