I repaired the tach on my 2440 JD. Plastic gear had stripped. Built it up with epoxy and filed the teeth down. It worked for many years after that. Take yours apart and see what you can see. You have nothing to lose.

That would make me wonder if they are having a lot of returns of the tachs they have for sale.
