2950 oil leak

We have a 1986 2950 John Deere with a cab. My son pulled it in the drive way and I saw oil dripping from the cotter pin at the clutch bell housing. Is the fix calling for a split at the bell housing and do we need a special tool to replace the main seal and the rear hydraulic seal? Do we have to remove the cab?

Is the oil dripping out black (engine oil generally) or amber (hydraulic generally)?

Someone else can answer on the cab for certain, but I expect you might have to if the floorboards cannot be removed and you need to get at the top of the transmission.

Yes, you need to split it to replace the rear main seal or the transmission input seals.

Yes, you need the proper tool to install the new style unitized rear main seal (DZ111672). Some sources may still have the old type of seal and the wear ring to go with it, that do not require that tool.

Cab doesn't require removal to split tractor between engine & clutch housing. I agree with Jim oil leak is either rear engine oil seal or if hyd oil is leaking trans input shaft or hyd hi-lo if equipped.

Cab comes off if it’s transmission oil

Cab stays on the rear when split if it’s engine oil

To do both of the possible seals it’s a double split both ends of the clutch housing

Whether cab needs to be removed to repair a hyd oil leak on a 2950 in clutch housing will depend on what component is causing the oil leak!!!!!!!! IIRC if the hyd hi-lo is leaking hyd oil then that can be repaired with cab in place by spitting between engine & clutch housing.

I think the 2640 I did to pull the 2 speed out it’s out the back of the clutch housing I know I had it double split. It was to rebuild the little planetary part of it and put a bearing around it in the case where a rivet had fallen out but I believe it was how to reseal it as well…

For sure you will want a manual on this especially if you end up building the forklift tool to lift the cab it is handy to have

When I was employed at JD dealer there was a tool that when mounted to a 2nd tractors 3pt hitch that had the tool had forks that could be slide in SGB frame channels so as to raise & hold SGB for removal.
I think mine is 3x5 forklift extension sized rectangle tube with a half inch plate that sticks out into the slots on the sgb and then nuts with a bolt to hold them on. I remember instructions in the book when I made them
