International Fence Charger

I was at the tractor show the other day and one of the vendors had a brand new fence charger which is still in the original box along with the advertisements and warranty card. It has "International Chicago IL" on the box and the charger, this is a model 650. The International font looked a lot like the side hood emblems on a late 60's IH Loadstar 1600. I looked it up online and it came back to the International Electric Company, was this charger made by International Harvester or a completely different company??

It is IEC & not IH.

Think IH had some branded for them though.

We got our International Fencer at the IH dealer.
We had an early version with green and red lights status of fence operation . Trade it in for a later international version.
I don’t know models or version of weed chopper they had . It was powerful, cut half way thru sapling. Might be why they were offering a good deal on trade in .

Never heard of trading in a fence charger.

I am 55 and that's the only fencers we had, or everybody around in NE Nebraska in the 70-80's, then move onto something else that doesn't come to mind now. In the garage where I live and rent, the landlord has 3 on the shelf and don't know anything about them, but used. Think the hardware store sold them or the co-op. They were good back in the day, little weak compared to what's made now.

And no pictures? Seeing something that old still in the box is a one time event. That's cool
Pictures are below of the fence charger

We had a couple of International fence chargers in the late 70s or early 80s. They were purchased at the county CO-OP. I don't think they had anything to do with the International Harvester company.

Dad had an IH fence charger from some time in the 40s. You darn sure didn't want to grab that wire. We had a few brave souls that were sure they could. As a little kid, it was sure fun to watch. When we had friends come on the place, we were told to advise them,"Don't grab the Fence wire.". Being kids, that was just a challenge, and entertaining.

The international super 98 was one of their best chargers.
I've fixed many of them. The filter capacitors aged & went
bad on the units.
I believe they were made in Minnesota.

When my youngest was about 4 years old she had a birthday party and invited all her friends from preschool. I made an announcement at the beginning of the party that the fence was hot and not to touch it.
There was one little boy that took that as a challenge. I told him 3 times to stay away from that fence, it will shock you. I saw him going for it again and I just kept my mouth shut. Next thing I know I hear a blood curdling scream, and needless to say I didn’t have to tell him a 5th time.

When I had the old Chevy , I would have to cruise to 4 H meetings all over Ashtabula County . The AM radio would pick up every farm the had the International weed chopper electric fencing . Buzz , Buzz , i had to turn the radio volume down till it was out of range . It also affected our tv 📺

Dad had an international fence charger in the 60's. Don't know if it was built by IH. I do know you didn't want to make contact with the fence. You probably don't need to ask how I know that.
I don't know who made the one fence charger that i encountered back in the summer of 1971 but that one put me on the ground and a half numb arm for two days . My buddy and i took on a contract with Tennaco to mow the four big gas transmission lines over country nobody in there right mind would take on . We had bought a almost new Case 310 G dozer that had three point and a PTO we rented a Case 430 Diesel wheel tractor and two 8 foot HD brush hogs First day did not go well as we learned fast that five hundred on the nose of the 430 was NOT enough and the little 310 the blade was NOT enough ft weight . So for the wheel tractor we added a 1000 more and on the 310 she got 20 I H ft weights added and on some hills ya only had four rear track pads on the ground . I ran the wheel tractor and most times i got to fence lines first to cut drop and get thru then repair what we dropped . I came to this plain bare wire fence tacked to posts and trees directly no insulators so there for NO ELECTRIC BOY was i wrong i went and grabbed that top wire with my leather gloved hand and the next thing i knew i was on my back in the grass with a numb left arm and tingling in my feet . I get up and stand there in total SHOCK . My buddy comes up with the 310 and he jumps off to make the cut and he grabbed it bare handed and kerrrrr bam he is on the ground . Not a farm nor house anywhere in sight . We spent most of the afternoon walking the fence me going one way and him going the other way looking for the owner to shut that thing down so we could get thru . That thing would have put a Grizzly on the ground

Sad story about that international weed chopper fencer . As very young friend came over with his dad to visit for the evening .
We were playing and my friend was running a down the barn bank to the drive . The electric fence ( small wire) was across the drive . I screamed for him to stop 🛑 as loud as I could . He hit the fence and it knock him dow hard. I help him up ,he was dazed . Both dads arrive to find out what happened . They took his shirt off and there was a wire burn across his chest from the fence.
Never forget this to this day ,regretting I could have done more to prevent .
My friend worked together for about 30 years . He’s was an excellent electrician.
