5640 SLE 16x16 Powershift issues

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on a few problems with a Ford 5640 SLE.

We’ve recently got it started after it’s been sat for around half a decade. It fired up absolutely fine and we took it for a run round the field, but it wasn’t particularly happy!

The gearbox is quite grindy when changing gears and the shuttle is very temperamental. Sometimes it engages, other times it doesn’t want to at all, especially in reverse. Me and my dad are wondering if it could just be the gear selector linkages, but we’re not sure.

The hydraulic warning light is also on constantly, and seems to flicker and get brighter when changing gear.

One of the rear wheels was locking up while we were driving it. We’re thinking it could be a sticking handbrake, after all the tractor has been sitting for ages, but haven’t had a chance to investigate properly. It was also struggling and nearly stalling quite a few times, which we reckon is because of that

The power steering pump is making quite a loud whining noise as well, but I’m not as bothered by that

It’s a 1994 French-imported 5640 SLE with 6,206 hours. The engine started perfectly and sounded good, although it was a bit reeky

Have any of you experienced similar troubles? If so would you know how to fix it? Especially the rear wheel. We have had issues with the linkages in the past but they were resolved.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

If you have a hydraulic warning light on, I would not run it any longer until you start doing some pressure testing, as you could potentially make a bad situation even worse. If this is something you intend to tackle yourself, the first thing you need to do is get a repair manual and study it, as I doubt anyone here is going to be able to coach you through this to a successful repair. When you say "....but we're not sure", that's not very good information for us to go on.

We only had an hour with the tractor. It’s also our first time messing with something more complicated than a select o speed 4000. If we were to do pressure testing, how would you go about doing that?

I had an 8240 with SLE, that developed shifting problems. The tractor will perform diagnostics on itself. The procedure was in my owner's manual, and was quick and easy. Mine revealed a leaking clutch pack seal.

That’s very handy. I’ve managed to get myself a copy of the Repair manual. Will the instructions be there? And If so where? And if it isn’t then could you possibly guide me towards the instructions? Many thanks.

First question, did you check the fluid level in at the dipstick at the left rear of tractor??? Sound like the tractor is low on hydraulic fluid... iirc thats a $6000 hydraulic pump and you really dont want to burn it up due to low fluids. The the filters,, and there can be 3 or 4 hydraulic filters on that model iirc. And I see a loader on it that my leak a bit meaning again it could be low on fluids...

No pools of oil around it. It is a possibility that it’s low on oil, but we were assured it wasn’t. It had enough oil to move as well. After reading up on it is looking more and more like calibration needing to be done. When I’m next over with the tractor even for 5 minutes I’ll double check the fill level. Another thing, would calibration fix the gear selector lights not working? Only the one for number 4 was working.
