Setting timing on John deere 950

I need instructions on setting the timing on John Deere 950 tractor. 3 cylinder diesel, 3t90j engine. I have already checked the manual I have and found it lacking. Hope you have a better source and/or experience.

The simple version is that timing is set by varying the amount of shims between the engine block and injection pump mounting flange, and checked using a "spill" method at the pump port and a timing mark on the flywheel.

I've got a manual around here somewhere, but can't find it at the moment, for the EXACT details.

What has happened that you are expecting the timing to be "off"?

Unless there are some engine parts damage, the original shims between the block and pump must be used for any PFR inline type pump. The spill method can be used, but the rack has to be in the correct position..

As stated, unless there was some major component change,
block, cam or crank.. the timing doesn't change.
Its set w/ shims under the inj. pump.
If your experiencing black or white smoke, low power & such..
u probably need to look elsewhere..
Filters> air & fuel.. Lift/supply pump.. dirty injectors..
A little history would save u a bunch of work..

I rebuilt the motor, installed new injector pump and had my injectors cleaned ans still getting a lot of smoke.
