    Cub generator questions

Your insight is very much appreciated. My Cub has a "new" wiring harness, maybe 15 years old, looks professionally produced. All the wires are in good condition and verified as being correctly wired. New ammeter last winter now shows no movement either way no charge, no discharge, maybe an...

    Cub generator questions

Dennis: Thanks for your response, but why do you think a tractor has issues when you see an alternator? Generators and Voltage regulators are 100 year old technology. I restored a John Deere 40, changed it over to 12V with an alternator and have had absolutely no problems with it over 10 years...

    Cub generator questions

Rodney, Thanks for verifying that the Delco 10SI alternator will fit under the hood. I have access to an 18 amp alternator. Now I have to check and see if a 12 volt battery will fit in the box. Then modify the cables. Change the bulbs, get a resistor so on and so forth. Seems easier just...

    Cub generator questions

Having problems with my 1950 cub generator system so I am researching the possibility of replacing the generator/voltage regulator with an alternator. I have been told a Delco Remy 10SI will fit under the hood without having to cut the hood. Can anyone verify this? Question #2: If I obtain...

    Speaking of Regulators........

Very good John! It did have an 8V battery when I bought the tractor. Has been changed out to a new 6V battery since. Always wondered why the PO had an 8V battery in there. Maybe there was a reason back then because he was having the same problem. Ron

    Speaking of Regulators........

Thanks to everyone trying to help. I think I will try to adjust the third brush. If that does not remedy the problem, I think I will have to take my problem tractor to the generator/alternator/starter shop. Ron

    Speaking of Regulators........

John T., Yes, the coil is 6V. Brillman Co. has the type of coil used on the old Cub engines. Fits inside the bracket and the terminals are on the opposite end of the primary wire going to the distributor, just like the originals. Question: Does the third brush in the genny have anything to...

    Speaking of Regulators........

Some time ago I started a thread about why my Cub's coil gets so hot that the engine will quit. It was suggested by someone that I should only be getting 7.2 Volts from the generator to the battery and no more. Any more voltage than that will cook a 6V coil so the gentleman said. So, I rigged...

1950 Cub gets tired and quits

Jim, Is there a way to check the generator voltage output with a multimeter, maybe on the voltage regulator poles? My ammeter is reading +10 amps, which seems OK to me for 6V.

1950 Cub gets tired and quits

Thanks Jim. That sounds like a possibility. I just mowed the rest of the field for about 20 minutes and the coil was hot when I returned to the shed. Did not shut down though like yesterday.

1950 Cub gets tired and quits

My Cub is sitting out in the field, dead...no fire from the coil to the distributor. Mowed grass for about an hour and a half and when she quit it was just like I had turned the switch off. Happened last week with my grandson on it. Will not start again until it cools off, maybe later tonight...

    1950 Cub won't start

Nope, I never heard tell of one either. Guess I'll be looking around for another coil.. Thanks a lot. Confirmed my suspicions. Ron

    1950 Cub won't start

Well Old, I fergot to spit on her. But my hand came off real quick when I felt up the coil. It did start right up after sitting in the shade for about an hour. Felt the coil this time and it had cooled down to maybe just warm. Maybe get a new coil and try it?? From the looks of it, the coil...

    1950 Cub won't start

Mowed for an hour and a half today with my Cub. Shut it off outside the barn to move another tractor out. Ten minutes later the Cub refused to start. Plenty of gas, but no spark that I can detect at the plug wires at the distributor. The coil is too hot to touch. Is this my problem...
