    IH 185 planter

    The 185 was the same concept as the Deere 70/71 unit planters in that the entire thing is self-contained and is driven by the press wheel. All IH planters took the same style of plate so you should be able to set it up for planting about anything.

    It is interesting to note that the Deere 530 was a close enough copy of the Hesston of that era (the closed throat balers like what you had was an older design) that Deere had to pay Hesston royalties after losing a patent infringement lawsuit.

    My tractors, including an IH 986, get Bomgaars "Harvest King Premium Tractor Trans-Hydraulic Oil" which is listed as meeting all the major manufacturer's specs for transmission/hydraulic fluid. Other regional farm stores would have a similar product.

    OK, that makes sense. AGCO part number is 713198 and the print lists Fafnir RA108RRB-3, BCA NPS107RP2NC, and Roberts SLF-24L as supplier part numbers. Being that the print is nearing 60 years old I'm sure there are other cross-references to these that would work just as well.

    Being a 74 model yours must be a side-pivot, correct? I'm seeing that the Roberts SLF24L bearing is used on the left end and is 1-1/4" OD. But, the bearing behind the belt drive is shown as 1-3/4" OD. So, I'm not sure what you've got. What is the serial number of your machine?

    To straddle two 30" rows the nominal center-to-center wheel spacing would be 60". Since the tires on these tractors are relatively narrow you can make do with something a little less, such as the 52" that my M is set up with.

    A wrench could round off the flats on the valve. I use a 1/4 drive, 7/16" socket in reverse since the square on the valve is 1/4 inch. Take a short quarter inch bolt and bottom out a nut on it. Then you can use a wrench on the bolt/nut assembly which then drives the "backwards" socket. Since...
