    All I can offer is my personal experience of being a (6 volt) to-20 owner for 30 years. I have started mine below zero, but the battery MUST be good, and I always spray ether in the air cleaner (just before cranking) when it gets down into the teens or so.

    WIW, aluminum is sometimes sand-cast also. The magnet test, as someone mentioned above, will tell you.
