The Boomer 8N was a joke. Red/white paint and vaguely 8n looking headlights? Charge 30k for it! Genius!

    8n hydraulics

If they didn't change the oil in 23 years, the hydraulic sump is probably full of all sorts of nasties. With the top cover off, drop the pump (easy part of the whole job) and clean everything well. The safety relief valve is easier to replace on the workbench (no stubby wrench needed)

    Knock when PTO is engaged

From Smith's Old Ford Tractors: "...as the cams wear they begin to knock louder as they actuate the pistons from side to side in the pump. The louder the knock, the more wear your pump has on it. It's generally not an immediate pressing problem. If the knock is faint you can probably put off...

    Help me order parts

Where do you find the cylinders with the correct clearance? I ordered one from this site, and it needed to be ground. Not wanting the extra work I went to the CNH dealer and ordered a cylinder. It showed up in a Tisco box and was the same one from this site. Regardless, grinding the new...

    Help me order parts

I just did this a couple weeks ago. Definitely drop the pump, it is the easiest part of the whole job and when you see all the crud you get out you will be glad you did. With no filter in the system, any crud you don't get out will end up in the lift cylinder (thanks Murphy) sooner or later...

    paint on tires

How much? Too much to let it dry and flake it off with a fingernail? Next time, take the tire off the rim before painting Shortcut Susan!

Never seen one in person, but still seems expensive

Interesting 500 series on craiglist, could be yours for 25k! "Shown around the country", anyone see it in their travels? http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/cto/5000347299.html

Pto shaft won't fit into pump

That's my first instinct, but hammering the pto shaft into the delicate looking pump yokes seemed like a recipe for disaster.

Pto shaft won't fit into pump

Took about 3 seconds worth of filing to knock down the tiniest of burrs and it fit perfectly.

Pto shaft won't fit into pump

Ya, i was tapping the other end to drive the shaft out so this end should be fine. No idea when it won't fit

Pto shaft won't fit into pump

Reinstalling the pto shaft and couldn't get it to fit into the pump at all. It's not the splines not aligning, I can't get the shaft in 1/4 of an inch. I dropped the pump and still can't get the shaft to slide in at all on the bench. The shaft doesn't look peened from hammering on it when...

    PTO Oil Seal

    Great, thank you

    PTO Oil Seal

The copypasta for the pto seal replacement references a "white side" and an "open side". I took a picture of each side. Which is white? Open? Which side towards the oil (front of tractor)?
