    high compression

Thanks for your input. Interesting comments. Whatever caused the excess is just going to the buyer as is. There should not be any problems only a more powerful engine. Thanks again.

    high compression

I need some input from you 8N scholars. I bought an 8N from a guy that bought it from some lady where it had sat in her barn for around 20 years. He put on a carburetor, battery, etc. He put it for sale. I saw it and he cranked it and it ran well. I bought it for a rebuild project. No...

    Low Compression rebuilt engine

Replies. Rings were set properly. Engine ran an hour or so. Engine was hot, plugs removed so engine would spin faster. Valves were ok. Only ground and set them. Sleeve went in with only a hand push. Had to use plenty of sleeve retainer to secure them. I did not bore the sleeve. If I had...

    Low Compression rebuilt engine

Ford 8n history unknown. Was in owners barn 10-15 years. Said it was running well when parked. I tore it do down and completely rebuilt engine. Turned crank, pistons, sleeves, etc. When I broke it down it had no sleeves in the block. Never seen nor heard of this. I assembled the engine...

    Engine knock. solved

On 11/4/21 I requested assistance from the forum with knock in engine after it was rebuilt, engine knock. I found the culprit. The rod on no. 4 was oversized for some reason. I put in another old rod and cap, torque to 40 lb. Noted a slight more effort in rotating the engine with hand...

    Engine knock.

I may have found the source of the knock. I pulled the head, manifold and valve covers. When I spin the engine with the hand crank the intake valve on no. 4 was making a must louder noise than the others. Oddly enough it was knock sound. I stuck a tool under it when up and noise stopped...

    Engine knock.

Thanks for replies. In reply to exhaust leak possibility. Block was painted and new manifold and gaskets. No residue smoke or other indication of leak. Also, while engine was stripped with head and pan off could still hear slight knock when spinning motor with hand crank. Cam is my only...

    Engine knock.

Unknown history on 48 8N. I bought it to restore. Rebuilt engine, turned crank, new kit, inserts (rod and mains), pistons, pen, rings, sleeves, etc. Cranks, runs fine. After warmed up you can hear a faint metal knock toward rear of engine. No. 4 maybe. Dropped pan. checked torque on all...

    8N shared sump

If you drained all three plugs your ok. I've done that and it works ok. Put your finger in the larger drain holes and see it there is a great deal of sludge and grim there. If so, take off your gear shift plate and you use a pressure and remove a great deal of it in the transmission base.

    9N transmission noise

Jack up the tractor and put it on jack stands. That way you can crank it and sit next to tractor and can listen and can tell if it's Sherman, transmission or hydrolic pump.

    transmission shims

I found it. Apparently one of the bearings (front or back) was not seated completely. I removed all shim and tighten the cap and it pressed the bearings into place. Torque is find now with three shims. Thanks for input.

    transmission shims

I had a bad bearing in the transmission so decided to replace all bearings an bearing cups. All is fine until installing the rear bearing retainer on the mainshaft. I have used all available shims I have which totals over 1/8 in - 3mm. It takes this much to for it to move required torque...

    transmission noise

I have an 8N and I have question. With tractor running it has a roar, like a bad bearing. It only does this with clutch released. Mass clutch and it's quite. Thought it was throw-out bearing and replaced. Is there a bearing in the tranny that fails?

    BRAKE DRUM SCREW RETAINER

Does anyone know a way to remove the retainer screw (4) in the brake drum on an 8N. Tried to chisel to loosen. Used torch an chisel - no luck. Finally drilled and used an extractor bit. That was work to do 8. Was told to weld Nut on screw face and wrench off. There must be a simpler way...

    tight crankshaf

I acquired an old 8n engine that was all to pieces, parts in box. I decided to put in together. Put in new sleeves, pistons, etc. Had the crank turned. 20 on mains and 30 on rods. Installed crank and bearings properly. Torqued mains to 100. Would not turn. Installed 3 thousand shims on...
