    Yet Another 2cyl steering thread

Been a long busy summer but I finally have this tractor beat! I sent the valve body off to Richard, he bored it out and replaced the spool with a new oversized spool. Had to deal with some installer error while rebuilding the pump to fix a leak that the installer (Me) introduced after...

    420T alternator conversion

Nope. It’s ded and the regulator was missing when we bought it. I’m not that partial to originality on a tractor that gets used as much as shown. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Ended up getting a 3/8x2 5/8 pulley from brillman

    420T alternator conversion

So. I’ve got this late model 420T slant steer with power steering (I think that makes it a 58?) Anywho I bought Steiner’s JDS6817 kit for the brackets and the alt since I didn’t have a core to go grab one from Napa. The alt they sent in the kit has a 1/2” pulley on it. Problem is, with power...

It’s probably not far off the right track. I’ll probably butcher this but basically what Richard was telling me yesterday is that 4 thousandths endplay is likely excessive especially considering the wear present in the entire system. I’ll post about my results once I get time to go through it...

    Yet Another 2cyl steering thread

I had a nice 30ish minute chat with Richard this morning about the valve body, pump and worm setup. I think he’s got me on the right track. For those following I will come back and post follow ups as I continue to make progress in hopes that this thread can eventually be a help to someone else...

Hi Rich! I’m humbled you replied to my post, I’ll certainly get up with you in the coming days if this pump rebuild doesn’t solve my problem.

I’ve been questioning it anyway. I’ll probably do that once I get the bench cleaned off.

    Yet Another 2cyl steering thread

I have not yet. I only get an hour or two each day to work on it and ran out of time yesterday. I’ll do I’ll my measuring today and see if it checks out. I’m in the middle of the same though. The pedestal seals gave out and dumped the oil in the cylinder on the ground. That started all of it...

So I think it was probably installer error. Or at least at this point that is the most likely culprit. The seal facing the oil side of the pump was caved in. Im thinking that’s the most likely cause, I didn’t see anything on the seal itself that was otherwise compromised. Now there is a very...

That’s why I said I’m not sure it wasn’t installer error lol. We shall see once I have it out. More to come

So if I’m understanding your saying that having end play on the worm as the book says of 1-4 thou could potentially result in the worm and actuating sleeve assembly actuating the valve too far? Just trying match up my understanding of how the system works with your comment. I understand the...

    Yet Another 2cyl steering thread

Well update. Got out to the shop this afternoon. Pressure is still 6-700 even cold. However, the seals on the front of the pump (yeah the new ones) are leaking. It finally I guess spun the second second enough to leak out the front of the pump. So I’m guessing that’s where at least part of my...

    Yet Another 2cyl steering thread

I do have a 730 with decent steering and a 530 that’s next on the list for a steering tune up. I might think about stealing the 730 valve assembly for testing. I suppose I could do the same with the pump. That’s a lot to take off 2 tractors at once though lol

    Yet Another 2cyl steering thread

So let’s assume for a moment that I’m not going to find a flow rater to use. The only thing I (dumbly) didn’t check while I had the pump out was to measure the gear diameter and the clearances to the top of the pump body. There were no grooves or another noticeable wear on anything except the...
