Vermeer F and G Series Baler Tips

Down at our Southern farm we have an old Vermeer 504G baler (actually a Massey 1440, which is a rebadged 504G). It's a rough old girl, but we don't do much hay at that farm compared to the Northern farm, so that old Vermeer gets us by down there. Several years ago I had posted on here and...

    851 auto tie. New Holland

I'm going to make some enemies here, as there are some folks who love those chain balers. But I'd personally be looking for something else based of my experiences with NH chain balers and others. A couple weeks ago someone was asking about those chain balers on here. Here was my response with my...

    Case 188D

The early 188's had head gaskets that you bought separate fire rings for. This was because (someone will correct me if I remember this wrong) of two reasons: i) The sleeve protrusion wasn't always perfectly consistent from the factory, so there were different fire ring thicknesses available...

    Mm 670 not charging

It must be a pretty high-amperage 1-wire to need 1850 RPM for excitation. Most 1-wire's are much lower than that. The one's with a high excitation RPM are usually only really high amp alternators - far more amperage than you need for most applications (especially any old tractor). But even...

    Baler plugging

Started to write a reply, then saw TxJim said everything I was going to say (and more). Listen to what TxJim has to say - he's the resident expert on JD round balers and his advice/knowledge has helped me a lot. Highly recommend the bars he suggests adding: I've done that on a few balers...

    Fuel Tank Rust Removal

This is a pretty common discussion on here. Here were my thoughts to a similar post not liking ago. In this case the OP was also considering a liner (I don't recommend unless you have pinhole leaks). I know the tank is a pain to remove as it's integral to the hood. But I'd still advocate for...

    60 Oliver

Pull drain plug in carb and watch fuel flow for a good 30-60 seconds. Should be a steady stream. Quite possibly gunkulence in the tank partially/fully blocking the tank outlet or lines. Very common problem on old iron. A good tank cleaning is likely in order.

    Oxy/Acetylene options

Personally: I'd never go back to acetylene after going to oxy-propane. Far cheaper/easier to get propane, and once you get set up right with the correct settings, tips, etc., I've noticed no difference for cutting and heating. You do want to make sure you're sizing things right: If you just...

    Ford 6610 starter negative connection

Did exactly this on our 6600. As long as you have a solid bolt grounding it to the block/frame somewhere, you'll be fine.

What Is The Largest - Highest Hp Tractor You Put In Front Of. A Haybine?

Haven't done it yet. But looks like in a couple weeks at our Southern farm I'll be running the IH 990 haybine behind an Allis 7045. Not ideal, just happens to be what works out with what tractors are available or scattered around and tied up with other jobs. The 7045's were lighter than many 145...

    Need help identifying this rake

I should have added: As far as setting the operator height- not much to go wrong. In any trail-type rotary rake, there's two adjustments. One (the crank in the centre of yours) is to raise/lower. The other (the crank on the tongue) is to get it level front-to-back. Sometimes a little...

    Need help identifying this rake

Ah, gotcha. Not sure if this picture helps for disassembly - this is from a Galfre AG parts manual. This is just a guess, but it looks pretty much identical to the Kuhn and Tonutti style of gearboxes. If so, you can hold the rake/gearbox elevated with the tires off the ground, unwind the crank...

    Need help identifying this rake

Did you see the response I posted in your question on Haytalk? I highly recommend asking on 'The Farming Forum' - a UK forum. Pretty much all rotary rakes (except Miller Pro) are European, and have been around and more popular in Europe for far longer than they have been here in North America...

    Water Heater Maintenance

The wells at two of our houses are such that the tanks will get full of sediment quite regularly, regardless of what you have up-stream for filtration. One of my peeves is the crappy, chintzy drain valves that come on any new hot water tank - they're usually plastic an likely to break of they...

can't find new wear plates for my bar mower

If you're referring to the knife backing plates you were talking about in your earlier posts, they're one of the few pieces that's universal between most sickle machines, because backset and guard spacing is pretty much standard for 90% of sickle mowers. Thus, any Case-IH, NH, Deere, etc...
