How do folks,
We've been pondering a rollover plow for our Northern farm for years. Most of our land there is very steep/hilly, much of it stupidly so. And it's all exceptionally rocky - it seems every thirty yards you're turning over a stone the size of a smart-car or jamming on bedrock (which in some cases is only a few inches below the surface). And after you're done plowing and a rain hits it, there are so many smaller stones the fields look more like a gravel pit than a field. Only a total goofball would try and farm most of that land (which says something about us and our ancestors).
Because of the steep hills, you really need to always throw your furrows down-hill to have any chance of them turning. And because it's so rocky, you really need a plow with good resets. We went through plows and parts like crazy back in the days when we were using IH/White plows. Not until we got the heftiest Kverneland we could with its beefy beam and spring resets that allowed full upward pivot did we have any success keeping the same plow around more than a few years.
Having to always throw the furrows downhill is a real pain. It often means a lot of plowing from the outside in and/or in a circular fashion. A lot of backing up and inefficient driving around with the plow out of the ground. A rollover plow would make life so much easier for us. There's a nice-looking rollover Kverneland coming up at an auction not far away. But what I'm not sure about: What (if any) kind of resets do rollover plows have? I can't imagine that they would reset in the same way that the conventional spring resets do that allow the boards and coulters to flip fully up. Do they have any reset capacity to them? This picture is the same model as the one coming up at auction (though not the same plow. And the one at auction has conventional coulters - not skimmers). Judging by the orientation of the leaf springs, it looks like any reset it has would be swinging sideways, not up.
Any thoughts/experience/recommendation/speculation?
