Ford 8n flywheel rotating without spinning the engine??

Hey guys issue with my 8n. Starter sounded like a bad bendix, replaced with new 12 volt unit, noticed that it only moves about 5/16" downthe shat when it spins. Also noticed that through the starter hole I can spin the flywheel without moving the engine..... Huh??? Video links attached...

    success!

After plugging my little hidden hole in the side of my carb, and installing a lower radiator block heater, My 48 8N came to life and purred like a kitten in 7 degree weather. My first plow job is completed. Thanks guys!

    Starter question

Thanks. So how would a new starter differ in performance than what I have now? in other words, why would a new starter stay engaged longer? Just want to understand b4 I plunk down the cheese....

    Starter question

Thanks guys! I'll plug er up. While I've got your attention, Can someone explain the physics of what causes the pinion gear to retract when operating normally? Is it the increase in engine speed caused by cylinders firing?, or could a dummy keep holding the switch down and actually ruin it...

    Starter question

Nope, This is a 3/16" (approx) hole in the upper body Where the red arrow points. Huge vacuum leak! Thanks in advance for all the help on this forum you guys are great!

    Starter question

Thanks guys. One more dumb question. My carb has a 3/16" round hole in the side of the body on the opposite side from the main jet screw. (the side towards the seat). It sucks some serious air during startup. Giant vaccum leak. Seems like it would suck a bunch of dirt in too in a dusty...

    Starter question

I have a strange starting issue with my 8N. It's been converted to 12 volts, and has started fine until the cold weather hit. Here's the deal. When I turn it over the starter spins fine until the motor starts to fire. At that point the (bendix/pinion?) retracts to the resting position and...

Poll: Average cranking time on cold start?

Hey guys, sinceI posted this I rebuilt my carb with no decrease in time to start the engine cold. I do have a couple of observations/stupid questions. 1)Q. Is the drain strainer supposed to have a cover? I just have a hole in the bottom of the carb. 2)Ob. After removing the air intake tube from...

Poll: Average cranking time on cold start?

I knew the answer...... It's a 12 volt conversion, and I get great blue spark. Seems like a carb thing. Runs best when the idle jet is damn near all the way clockwise.

Poll: Average cranking time on cold start?

I have a 48 ford 8N that takes an average of 15-20 seconds of cranking on a cold start. Just curious if this is normal as this is my first Ford tractor. I"m a little worried about the battery this winter for those cold plowing sessions..

Alternate sources of front wheel weight on 8n?

During my virgin run with my 5' squealer, The front end seemed mighty light up the hill. I managed to widen the rear end, (How cool is that!) but a couple of bolts are frozen on the front. I was going to cut and drill those out, widen the front end and then attach some weight to the front...

OOPs........ Check this out. It stalled on a hill, so I popped the gas cap to check for vapor lock and...... No gas. What a moron.
