    SMTA PTO fluid

I am checking fluids on my SMTA. Can anyone tell me what goes in the reservoir that surrounds the PTO shaft? It has a cap that comes off on top but no dipstick. I did not look for an overflow plug but assume there must be one. What goes in there and how do I check the level. Thanks!

    Some starting help needed.

I was hoping if maybe I could get some help starting my SMTA. This is a tractor that always starts every year but has not been run since last fall. Battery has been charged. I am able to manually turn the engine over...it is not stuck. I pull out the switch and then pull the starter rod...

Back working on the 300 utility - question(s)

I got it unstuck! There was no place to access the ring gear easily. I had to put the starter back on the tractor because, now I recall, I took it in for service. The battery needed a charge so had to wait on that. I had sprayed Zep 45 around the edges of the pistons last night. I thought I...

Back working on the 300 utility - question(s)

I can check that. I am pretty sure I had this starter serviced a year or so ago but that is another dead memory. Almost certain though. Still no reason not to check, just to be thorough. I did the ring gear thing though. Think maybe I will try that with the head off though. Maybe that will...

Back working on the 300 utility - question(s)

I do not have the crank or one that fits it. The pulley that you would put the crank onto is missing the cross piece that fits the crank if I had one. Good to hear from you. We know each other from the past...either lunch at Fowlerville or some other post I was doing. Cannot recall which.

Back working on the 300 utility - question(s)

Good to know about the pistons. I was wondering about that. I will put the starter back in and come up with a way to power it briefly to see if it moves them. Thanks.

Back working on the 300 utility - question(s)

They have been soaking in oil up until yesterday when I pulled the head. The two lower ones still are. I mentioned the piston position because it occurred to me that this was the case and the block and hammer would be a no go. I also wondered if it was normal for two to be up and two down...

Back working on the 300 utility - question(s)

This project goes back a few years. I am beginning to think it is cursed as I have had some serious health issues since starting it. No details on that, just believe me when I tell you I cannot remember something. The memory is not going to come back. Briefly, this tractor had a bad rear...

Starting 1586 that has sat idle for years?

I have a 1586. I cannot remember for sure but I believe it has been sitting a 2-4 years without being run. It was a solid running tractor. I had a series of health issues...much better now....and would like to get some of this equipment running. Before I try to crank it, anything I should do...

    International 300u...back at it (3)

It was the intention this weekend to look at the lifters. If they were fine then I would start the work on pulling the head again. I will let you in on a little joke at my expense. I have long thought that the little cover on the side of the tractor was to inspect the lifters. This would be...

    International 300u...back at it (2)

No harm giving that a try. I'm pretty conservative in the "if you have to force it you probably need to look at some other option" category. I do want a glance at those lifters though. There is a lot of paint on the fasteners for the access cover so I have never been in there. Everything...

    International 300u...back at it (2)

Appreciate it! I am going to start prepping for the head to come off. I have to take a some time and attend to other farm issues and work but will try to work toward pulling it apart again next weekend. I'm going to start on the left side and will inspect the lifters before I pull the head...

    International 300u...back at it (2)

Today...Saturday Oct 19...After another 24 hour soak with diesel. I revisited trying to move the tractor forward with TA in the high position...or direct, or disengaged..whatever it is called. No joy. Then I put the TA in low and tried to push it backward...nothing. I pulled the rocker...

    International 300u...back at it (2)

I was thinking that if it had a stuck valve keeping it from turning over that removing the plugs would get around that by relieving the pressure in the cylinder and effectively providing an intake and outtake as the engine turned. What I am not sure of is if the engine trying to open the valve...

    International 300u...back at it (2)

I cannot get to the rear of the tractor to pull it with another tractor as it is backed into the shop. I would have to drag it out in the open and then would have a heck of a time getting it back in if it stayed stuck. There is enough room to push it back though, so I will try Saturday when I...
