    starter won't cut out

I replaced the solenoid, $9, and all is well. I tested the solenoid when it was on the tractor and it showed continuity between the two large lugs. Before replacing the new one I bench tested it and there was no continuity between the large lugs and just for fun I tested the old one again...

    starter won't cut out

"48 8n 6 volt, I had a little trouble starting my n yesterday because it got wet and didn"t pop on the first try but on the third or fourth try the starter engaged and wouldn"t cut off even after turning of the ignition switch to cut the power. It kept cranking until the battery gave out. I...

    8N 6 volt genny reg

OK, OK when you type in all caps it hurts my ears! I will never mix my amps and volts again. I had the afternoon off so I just now ran out to the garage and rechecked 7 volts between the battery posts and 7 volts at the arm and grd at the generator case then reversed the direction the heavy...

    voltage testing six volt generator

JMOR, thanks for the reply, I did not have the field grounded and when I did the motor test all I did wasrun a jumper from the battery post on the positive side to the arm contact on the genny......oh, I think I answered my own question, I must have reversed the gennies polarity then, ok so how...

    8N 6 volt genny reg

I posted earlier about my 47 8n generator and voltage testing it, by the way thanks so much for the help, but now having replaced the voltage regulator I get a discharge showing on the ammeter of about 2-4 volts at low idle and upwards of 10-20 volts at high rpms. I was careful to polarize the...

    The addiction continues.

My friend Walter has two more than his wife knows about. He keeps them down on a lower part of his farm where he has convinced her a large colony of snakes reside down there which effectively keeps her away.

P.S. This is what I'm working on.

    voltage testing six volt generator

Okay, I went home and did what you suggested last night, and the genny does motor. I looked at the VR and it seems clean, not burnt or welded shut but I will replace it anyway because its relatively inexpensive. I noticed when it motored it spun in the opposite direction of what it would with...

    voltage testing six volt generator

It's an 8N, 1947. The genny has three wires and a high/low adjustment screw. Arm is on the back plate and the field and ground are on the side.

    voltage testing six volt generator

What is the best way to differentially diagnose the voltage reg. from the generator using a voltage ohm meter?

    8n bendix

Thanks for the advice, it took a little wiggling but it worked as you said, after starting it worked fine. I know I read in this forum frequently about keeping the electric contacts clean and this was the case with my 'supposed' starter failure. After taking the starter out, bench testing it...

    8n bendix

After pulling the starter on my 47 8N I somehow got the bendix extended and can't get it back down. I read on an earlier post about overriding the bendix by using a bench grinder (?) Can someone give me a little more info. Thanks
