8N 6 volt genny reg

I posted earlier about my 47 8n generator and voltage testing it, by the way thanks so much for the help, but now having replaced the voltage regulator I get a discharge showing on the ammeter of about 2-4 volts at low idle and upwards of 10-20 volts at high rpms. I was careful to polarize the fields by jumping the bat and arm terminals at the vr with a screwdriver with the ignition switch off. I did motor test it and it spun but as I mentioned in the opposite direction than when it would be turning by the fan belt. So, somehow I've reversed the polarity of the genny field so how do I 'unreverse' it? Should I be grounding the field when I jumper the bat and arm?

The field tab of a A-circuit genny is already at or near ground potential..

Jumper bat and arm terminals.. and make sure your battery is hooked up positive ground.

Your amp meter reads in AMPS.. not VOLTs.

Do a voltage check.. if your voltage across your battery is in the 7.x volt range at high idle.. you are good.. if the amp meter shows a negative deflection.. you have it wired up backwards.

post back with more details.

Substitute "Amps" for "Volts" in yout post.

Trust me on this... you HAVE NOT "reversed the polarity of the genny field"!

OK, OK when you type in all caps it hurts my ears! I will never mix my amps and volts again. I had the afternoon off so I just now ran out to the garage and rechecked 7 volts between the battery posts and 7 volts at the arm and grd at the generator case then reversed the direction the heavy wire ran through the induction ammeter and v`oila it hovers at 3-4 amps, jumps slightly when I switch on the lights but then settles down after a few moments. Thanks for the good advice. Now that I"m done with the tractor I can have a beer... oh oh my wife just noticed I"m on the computer and realized I"m now available to help finish the kitchen cabinets....does anyone know how to cut a 45 degree inside miter joint for the crown molding above the cabinet?
