    log splitter

Need one. I'm a homeowner, do nothing commercial, but do split a lot for a big house. Had one that worked off tractor remotes but this was less than ideal. Any reason I should NOT go to Lowe's, Tractor Supply, Home Depot, and just get one of the $1500/$2000 ones? Thanks, Cliff

    30 wt oil

I have a few older small engines (Kholer, Briggs) that call for 30 wt oil. Local auto parts guy says it's getting harder to find (everything is multi-visc), though he had some. He says to go 10-30 or even 20-50. I know these old engines are loose, but I'm skeptical. What are you guys running...

    Miller 215 MP welder

There it is - thanks. So I may be able to do a little at 90 to 100 amps, 3/16 with 7018. Probably enough to help out someone with a minor repair. Assuming they have stout 110 circuitry. I have one circuit down in my shop (which used to be a kind of residence) that is strung with 14 gauge wire...

    Miller 215 MP welder

Comes with ability to use 110 or 220. I figure I can MIG a little with 110, but MIG is not an option right now.. The manual really does not say whether I can do any stick with 110. Naturally I use 220 normally when doing stick, but let's say I want to take the machine up to my neighbor's house...

    Gravely Pro G16 again

Well, my theory (read 'hope') was that if the fuel supply was being constricted - but not totally cut off - choking it aggressively was creating enough additional pull to fill the line and filter which would have drained off somewhat last time I shut it off. When the system was full up now...

    Gravely Pro G16 again

I guess I'll try fiddling with that a little. Won't cost anything and at worst, I have a rough running tractor - which I have already.

    Gravely Pro G16 again

So rather than try and find/install a carb rebuild kit, maybe it would be better to get a Chinese complete carb - cheap, maybe effective, and easier than tearing apart the old one assuming everything fits up. I've got a reprint service manual for the M18/M20 and they reference trouble shooting...

    Gravely Pro G16 again

Well, I got the switch fixed and the machine will turn over now and start. But maybe some ideas about what's causing the following: Up until recently - for many years - in the cold, a full choke would get it going and then after maybe 45 seconds, a minute, I could push choke in and away I'd go...

Gravely Professional G Series, 987 Series

I undid that seat lockout 25 years ago...but you guys came up with something that didn't occur to me. I was doing some other work on the thing and maybe I kicked in the PTO lever inadvertently. I'll check that out in the morning (too cold down there right now). Hope it's as simple as that.

Gravely Professional G Series, 987 Series

This 4-wheel tractor is about 25 years old and has a Kholer Magnum 16HP twin. I bought it new and it is a tough one, has served me well. Problem is this: the directional pedal, positioned on the right, pushed forward makes the unit go forward. You can also lock it down in this position. If you...

    snow plow shoes again

Problem where I live now, it seems to be freeze/thaw cycles all winter long. I used to live in the northeast, where once the ground froze up in late December, things smoothed out till early March and as you say, then I could plow over top. Here, I'm often plowing thawed mud/gravel, and without...

    snow plow shoes again

I never worked with anything other than mild steel. Regarding old plow points, chisel points, I'm assuming these can be welded with regular (7018) stick rod? I have some pieces of old truck spring around, but I gather this is real fickle to weld, and maybe not even applicable here. I need...

    snow plow shoes again

I found these old brackets back in my junk pile that I think came off a machinery shipping crate. Stem is 1 1/8 cold-rolled. My question now is, assuming the brackets are just low end soft steel, should I try and hard surface them underneath to minimize wear, or wouldn't it really matter? I've...

    snow plow shoes

Now that looks quick, economical - if something goes wrong it can't go very wrong. I'm gathering also that once the surface freezes up good, we might not need much in the way of pipe, shoes or anything else. Think I'm off to buy some PVC, and I'll weld up some shoes later, maybe never. Thanks

    snow plow shoes

Thanks all for the input - the pipe idea is interesting. Thanks for the heads up about not letting the stems stick up too far above the mounting flanges. This blade has been around the block, and I wondered what those patch welds were about directly in front of the mounting flanges on the front...
