    John Deere A transmission

My 1950 A had a growl under load and the transmission bearings were worn out. Replacing the bearings is a “job”, takes almost every tool in the toolbox, heavy puller, and a heating torch. The job took over 2 weeks, working every day. The best graphic for assembly was the online JD parts list...

1950 John Deere A carb issues

So the engine fired up and ran before but now it doesn t? This is my process after working on a carburetor. Bolt it to the intake manifold, screw in a hose nipple with clear plastic hose into the bowl drain, with gas line attached to carb fuel inlet, turn on fuel valve, holding tubing...

    Oliver 310

4" pistons would have to be custom made. 3-15/16" used to be available, haven t seen them listed recently. Wall thickness upper section for a 310 sleeve is close to .250", so boring to 4.005 would work - however - the lower section behind the o-ring is only .130" which means boring for a 4"...

    JD Occasional Miss

For the big cu-in JD s my observation has been that they are susceptible to an occasional miss which is actually a "cough" back through the intake, usually under moderate to heavy loads. My A is 644, not huge by today s standard, will occasionally cough right near the end of a hook. A couple...

    1949 A - crank gear replacement

While anything may be possible, removing the gear with the crank installed is going to be a challenge if the interference fit is still there. With the crank out, I used a large bearing separator to get the gear started, then a puller and quickly heated the OD with a rosebud torch. Heated to...

    JD A transmission help

The 51A I bought made a vibrating growl in 2nd gear, turned out to be the bearings on the upper and lower shaft were worn and pitted. Changing out the bearings took me more than 2 weeks which included replacing rear axle seals. Bearings were $400, must have used every tool in the toolbox...

Need help john deere B clutch

A mistake Ive made when installing the clutch engagement mechanism in the reduction cover has been to slide it in and the collar was next to the groove in the pulley sleeve instead of actually in the groove, then there is no possible adjustment.

Type of paint for exhaust manifold?

Best luck Ive had is by blast cleaning the surface, apply a light coat of Rustoleum zinc rich primer, followed by a coat of black Rustoleum high temp engine paint. A little shiny at first, turns satin after a thorough heat cycle. Any exhaust coating including jet-coat will eventually get rust...

    JD A manifold

No, tapped holes do not go into water. If making the tractor historically correct, studs. If making it usable, eliminate studs and the clearance problems, use bolts. Light coat of copper cote on the gasket.
