    John Deere B Fan shaft

As I remember, you are likely to damage the radiator if you don't remove it first. It's not that hard to take off, and I found it makes getting the fan shaft out much easier.

    K46 tuff torq transaxle T40

There are enough reported failures that I wouldn't personally take one if it were free. Just not worth the risk, and too much work and/or $$ to fix. I suppose it depends on how much of a gambler you are though!!

    All Wheel Steer JD mowers

Had an LX277 AWS for many years, and liked it very much, except that it did have trouble on steep inclines. Two years ago traded it for an X739, AWS and AWD. This combination is exceptional if you have lots of trim work to do on hilly ground. I can't imagine being without the all wheel steer...

That is just the way it's done

Each time you're offered an extended warranty, say "no thanks", and put that much money in a "repair kitty". If something that was supposed to be covered under the extended warranty, use the money to pay for the repair or replacement. You will find that "repair kitty" grows much faster than...

    Roll-O-Matic questions

Considering my options for replacing a standard narrow front end with a Roll-O-Matic. I've got a '49 B with a one piece pedestal and standard narrow front end. Can I replace the steering shaft with a Roll-O-Matic, or do I need a different pedestal also? If the Roll-O-Matic can be...

    Late B hood changes?

Were there any differences in hood construction over the years for the "late" styled B that would help date a hood? Reason for asking is I'm trying to figure out if the hood on my '49 B is original to the tractor, or if it was replaced at some point with a later hood. I recently stripped...

    '49 B Battery box question

I'm reassembling my B and noticed this small (about 3/8") hole in the front of the battery box. Is this hole normally used for something, such as a clamp for the battery cable? I can't find anything definite in the parts book, but it isn't very easy to interpret in this area! Any help...

    B pulley brake arm spring?

I'm pretty sure it's a manufactured piece, the bends and shape are too uniform for home made. Would be interesting to know who made them.

    B pulley brake arm spring?

This spring has always been on my B, it retracts the pulley brake arm. I can't find reference to it anywhere in the parts book or service manual. Has anyone seen this before?

Antifreeze leak in B cylinder block

Hit a snag while assembling my '49 JD B. Had a very slow drip of AF that looked like it was coming from the bottom of the block, at a small depression in the side of the casting. I poked at the spot with a screwdriver, and went right through. Not much more there than paint and rust. I...

    Gauges for a 1949 B

Thanks! I'll give him a call tomorrow.

    Gauges for a 1949 B

Does anyone make accurate reproductions of the gauges for a 1949 John Deere B? I'm not looking for "close", but ones that match the appearance and face details of the originals. Thanks!

    39 B reduction gear bearing

Make sure the bore for the bearing in the reduction gear cover isn't worn oversize. If it is, just replacing the bearing may not remove the excess play.

    '49 B Generator color

Was the gen installed after paint, or installed but masked? If installed after, what was finish on mounting hardware, pulley nut/washer?

    '49 B Generator color

I've been trying to unravel what color was the generator when my '49 B was built. I realize this is a nit in the overall scheme of things, and the tractor will look and run just fine whatever color the generator is, I just want to know!! Does anyone have any good hard evidence on the subject...
