    Ford 4500 backhoe

    Thanks for the replies. This has a stand alone main hydraulic pump shaft driven of course. When I filled the hydraulic resovoir and started the motor the steering did turn automatically as if the steering pump was priming up. Hopefully it is the seal on this pump huh?

    I filled the hydraulic fluid resovoir and it is overflowing the crankcase oil dipstick. How can this be?? Is there a connection between the two systems? HELP????

    All good suggestions. Maybe fabricating levers is the (easiest) way to go. I do like the joystick idea but am a bit lost on how to go about that.

    Well the belt is definitely working. I do suspect that the cable is wonky on the tach though. I need a primer on the gen system.

    Thanks for that. Should the generator be putting out voltage regardless of other problems down the line or is it "told" when to put out voltage by the regulator. I am trying to determine if the gen is bad and I guess understand how it works.

    I noticed the red light then the tachometer went crazy(maybe not related but the tach comes off the generator). With my meter there is no power coming off the generator's two wires. Is this normal? Could it be a regulator problem? I guess I really don't understand how the charging system works...

    That was exactly right. The bracket had fallen down and the spacers were at the bottom. I put it together and it works perfect. Thanks for your reply.

I opened the top cover and the shift lever moves a slotted bracket that is pinned in with two bolts on the side of the case.
