    Without definitely knowing the cause of my problems, they seem to have resolved. It will be several more tests over a few days to be sure, but I am hoping they don't return. It may be running smoother than it did over most of forty years, but being able to retain the reliability I counted on...

    I think I have gotten the needle valve leak under control. It will leak a little over night but not enough to cuse running problems. Now it might start easily and run nicely for five minutes or so. Then stopping it means no restart. Tuens out that the carb is thoroughly flooded at this point...

    Close to two weeks later, this thing is still resisting us. I have always used the technique of replacing (or changing the setting of) a problem part one thing at a time to pinpoint the culprit.     Thanks soaked, I would have used the tap route if I had one, but I realized the washer was loose after my first attempt and gradually got it tightened down enough to stop a leak.     I have had my 8N for about half its life and it has served me well, but not a lot recently. When it had trouble starting (and then not at all) I sent for the comprehensive rebuild kit sold here. The rebuild (petty sure its first one) went smoothly and it started and ran really well afterward...

    TOH: I appreciate your input. What are the chances the problem is a loose pick-up rather than wear? I've read that that can be diagnosed through the pan drain plug. Can it be fixed that way?     OK, found the 15/16th bolt, AKA oil relief valve, masquerading as a timing cover bolt. Will try that route after gauge line.

    Thanks. I tried that just before calling it a day yesterday. I got two or three ounces down the pipe, but it didn't come back up. Going to try again. How much oil minimum? How fast?. I did not locate the big front plug yet. Seems kind of tight in there (fan belt, etc.) for any operations.
