What is normal for a FOrd 8N?

Thanks to all on this. Since the piston and seal were replaced and it stayed the same I am inclined to suspect the pressure relief valve. Tip 16 does not address the procedure to replace this. Is this a complicated job?

What is normal for a FOrd 8N?

I am running a 5 foot bush hog driven off the PTO of my Ford 8N with the PTO clutch and using the three point to lift it. The hydraulics only holds the bush hog up for a few seconds once the PTO is disengaged with the clutch or just left stationery and PTO disengaged. The hydraulic piston under...

Boring 40 sleeve engine to 90 sleeve

Can a 8N block be bored out from the .40 sleeve to the .90 sleeve? Not sure if it is too close to the valves or if there is enough meat to bore this engine that had been run without sleeves in it. Would a new lip need to be cut into the top also? Thanks, John Ayres

Converting 40 sleeve block to 90 sleeves

I have a 8N block that someone ran without the sleeves in it. The bottom line is the cylinders are uneven and after an attempt to hone the walls and put 45 sleeves in the sleeves were uneven and the lip broke off. I am resigned to trying to bore out the cylinders and use 90 sleeves. Were the...

    8N engine rebuild

I have an 8N block with rotating valves and 9/16 oil pump gear. When we pulled the head off it had no sleeves in it and .083 pistons. We took 40 sleeves out of another block and slipped them into this one and they go in by hand without having to pound in which is not a good sign as someone...

    8N vs 9/2N

I bought it because of the Howard trans, Sherman and the rototiller on the back as I knew the engine was shot but still worth buying! Thanks for all your help!

    8N vs 9/2N

I was primarily trying to determine what type of engine I have on what appears to be a mutt already. The purist in me would want a 9N engine however then a total re paint would be n order and my main motivation is to get this rototiller tractor operational. As my post yesterday was to find out...

    8N vs 9/2N

I have a cracked block on the engine in what I am determing to be a late 2N tractor as it has the 6 lug tires and 2n pedals with the oval style rather than I beam style arms. However the engine numbers are illegible but there is a 8N cast into the block on the lower left side with some type of...

    9/2N and levers

I was thinking that the lever style on the left I have is slightly different than the combo lever shown on the Smith web site. And where it comes out the side seems to differ from the combo pic on the Smith page which seems 3-4 inches further back towards the rear. The step up appears to be on...

    9/2N and levers

Sounds like a plan. From one pic on the Smith site it seems the hole for the lever is in a different spot. In any event any kind of Sherman is an added bonus and with the Howard it is quite a combo. As I have two postions with a neutral in the middle on this lever would it seem to be the combo...

    9/2N and levers

I have a Howard trans on the right side of the tractor behind the trans. It does say England on the bottom of it externally. The lever on the left which this picture shows I can't find anything on the Smith site for. It changes the PTO speed with a neutral in between. Any idea who made this and...
